Sibling in Christ,

Where do you hear God's voice?

This Sunday in the church season is unofficially called Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a comforting image—but also a necessary one for the times we are living in.

In Ezekiel, chapter 34, the Lord speaks hard truth about shepherds who have failed—leaders who scattered the flock and cared more for themselves than for the sheep. And yet, right in the middle of that judgment, comes a promise: “I myself will search for my sheep… I will seek the lost… I will feed them.” God does not abandon God's people. Instead, God steps in.

That promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus. In the 10th chapter of John's gospel, He tells us, “I am the gate.” Not only the shepherd who watches over the flock, but the very gate through which the sheep pass into safety and life. The risen Christ opens the way—into forgiveness, into peace, into what He calls abundant life.

This is not a distant or abstract promise. It is as near as your baptism, where God has already led you beside still waters (Psalm 23). It is as present as the table set before you each Sunday, where Christ feeds you even in the presence of a world marked by conflict, anxiety, and uncertainty. He anoints your head with oil, restores your soul, and gathers you again and again into His care.

And then—God sends you.

We do not leave worship unchanged. We go forth as those who have heard the Shepherd’s voice, as those who have passed through the gate, as those who now become signs of His resurrection life for others. In a world that often feels scattered and strained, your presence matters. Your kindness, your listening ear, your quiet faithfulness—they all become extensions of the Shepherd’s own care.

So this week, listen for God's voice. Follow where God is leading you. And trust that the gate is open before you.

Because in Christ, abundant life has already begun.

In the peace of the Good Shepherd,

Pastor Will

P.S. I’d love to hear from you—Where might God be inviting you this week to reflect Christ's tender care—to seek out one who feels lost, to offer presence to someone in need, or simply to remind another that they are not alone?

Caring for the Altar: A Special Appeal

The Altar Guild is a quiet but essential ministry that touches every one of us at each service at Emmanuel. We are blessed to have fourteen dedicated members whose combined service exceeds 100 years, faithfully attending to the many details that make our worship meaningful and reverent.

Throughout the church year, the Altar Guild prepares the altar and communion vessels for more than 150 services, in addition to special services such as Advent and Easter, as well as funerals and memorials. Their work extends far beyond Sunday mornings. Guild members set up and clean up communion, coordinate altar flowers for regular and special occasions, order supplies, launder robes for communion assistants, and collaborate with staff and volunteers to ensure that each service is thoughtfully prepared.

An important aspect of their ministry is the care and placement of paraments—the liturgical fabrics that adorn our altar and worship space. These include the chasuble, stoles, altar hangings, banners, chalice veil, and lectern banner. The colors of these paraments change throughout the church year, reflecting the liturgical calendar that begins with Advent. From blue and purple to white, red, and green, each color helps tell the story of the season and enriches our worship experience. Green, in particular, is the color most frequently used throughout the year.

Over time, our green paraments have become worn and are in need of replacement. The Altar Guild has requested new green paraments that are fitting for our beautifully restored altar. The Worship Committee strongly supports this request; however, funding for this project is not included in the current operating budget.

Therefore, we are inviting the congregation to participate in a special appeal to help fund this important project. The estimated cost for new paraments is $8,000.

In a wonderful show of support, a generous member of our church has offered to match all contributions, helping us reach this goal more quickly.

We hope you will prayerfully consider making a gift.

Contributions can be made by designating “Paraments” on your check or offering envelope, or by using the online giving option on the Emmanuel website.

Thank you for supporting the Altar Guild and for helping sustain the beauty and meaning of worship at Emmanuel.
