The pulpit at Whaleman’s Chapel in  Moby Dick  “was in the likeness of a ship’s bluff bows, and the Holy Bible rested on a projecting piece of scroll work, fashioned after a ship’s fiddle-headed beak.” When the preacher ascended into the lofty pulpit, rather than climbing a set of stairs, he rose in sailor-like fashion by means of a rope ladder. It is a powerful image of the Word proclaimed from the pulpit as the leading edge of the church.
 
This year’s theme for Elevating Preaching is “Leading from the Pulpit.” We have a remarkable program with sermons from the Rev. Dr. Naomi Tyler Lloyd, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Bronx, New York, and the Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, recently of Riverside Church in New York City. Duke Divinity Dean L. Through the Regional Growing Young Cohort , we want to help you sort through the numerous strategies you could try and instead focus on what’s most essential in helping young people discover and love your church. This advanced training model invites your team to journey with like-minded churches for one year through:

• Two in-person summits that dive into the research behind Growing Young , foster small and large group discussions, and help you create a plan to implement new strategies in your church. 

• Regular online webinars hosted by FYI and other leading ministry voices on topics such as leading change, sociological and cultural trends among today’s young people, conquering conflict and more.

• One year of personalized coaching , including support in developing a strategy for change.

• Access to the church-wide version of the Growing Young Assessment - a comprehensive online diagnostic test that sheds light on areas for growth and guides your steps.

The next day (Sept. 12), clergy of all denominations and faiths are invited to a breakfast workshop called "Preaching Punchlines: The Ten Commandments of Comedy." This is a fun and engaging look at how the tools of comedy can inspire and transform preaching.
Pinnacle Clergy Collective

The Clergy Collective is an emerging group of clergy who are responding to the call to lead their churches toward being part of God’s kingdom more fully day by day. Over time, we at Pinnacle have engaged with numerous clergy in these four South Carolina central cities. Ministerial Excellence Initiative
Now is the time to apply for the Ministerial Excellence Initiative (MEI) grant, designed to help pastoral and congregational leaders identify and respond to financial stressors causing anxiety in their personal and professional lives. The MEI grant provides direct financial support and direct retirement support totaling $10,000. Additionally, grant recipients receive coaching, financial literacy training and financial advisement! Adult Leader Training
September 21, 2019

A morning training for adult leaders of youth ministry will be held by video conference on September 21. This 2 ½ hour training is being hosted by many churches including at least two CBFNC churches, Ardmore and College Park, both in Winston-Salem. The training is through Download Youth Ministry which is connected to Orange and Fuller Youth Institute. The trainings will be TED Talk-style videos with group conversations after each video. Dr. Reggie Williams to Deliver Inaugural Mary Washburn Wilson Lectures

Dr. Reggie Williams, Associate Professor of Christian Ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, will deliver the inaugural Mary Washburn Wilson lectures for the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University October 14-15, 2019.

On Monday, October 14, he will speak on the theme “Bonhoeffer Learning Discipleship in Harlem,” and on Tuesday, October 15, his lecture will be “What We Must Do to Be Free: Black Aesthetics and Christian Discipleship.” Both lectures will be delivered in Dover Chapel on the Gardner-Webb University campus in Boiling Springs, North Carolina at 1:00 PM on both days.
