APRIL 2016 NEWSLETTER
We are proud to have a vibrant, cheerful, welcoming adoption center at AWS. We welcome folks to stop by for a visit, socialize with the animals, take them for walks and of course ADOPT!

But did you know that the shelter in West Kennebunk is not the only place you can adopt a pet from AWS?
SATELLITE ADOPTIONS
Local businesses, such as pet supply stores, veterinary offices and hardware stores house and care for AWS pets, mostly cats. Many of these businesses and area festivals host AWS staff and volunteers for special adoption events. Thanks to these awesome partnerships, we are able to help even more  animals find their new happy homes. Animals like Tripp, who went home in February from PetSmart during their National Adoption Weekend. Just look at those smiling faces!

Our satellite adoption program also allows pets to be seen by a new audience, folks that may not have come to the shelter in West Kennebunk, but who are excited to have a new pet. This can be especially beneficial for long-term residents. Sometimes a change of venue is just the thing to spark an adoption!

We had 260 pets go home to their new families from satellite locations in 2015.
We're hoping for even more in 2016!

 APPRECIATION APRIL
APRIL 10th - 16th ~ National Volunteer Week
Our volunteers and foster families are a crucial part of our operation. We couldn't care for as many animals as we do without them. In 2015, they logged more than 11,000 hours of service to AWS and our animals!
Thank you!!

APRIL 10th - 16th ~ Animal Control Officer Week
We appreciate everything our animal control officers (ACOs) do to protect pets in the communities they serve. We are especially grateful for their support in spreading the word of AWS' programs and services. In 2015, ACOs from our 21 contracted towns, brought 819 stray, abandoned or neglected pets from their communities to the safety of AWS.

APRIL 17th - 23rd ~ National Pet ID Week
Many of the pets brought in from Animal Control Officers and good Samaritans are lost. With microchips, we are able to quickly call their worried owners. Microchipping is the fastest and easiest way to reunite lost pets. It's so important that we ensure all shelter dogs and cats are microchipped prior to adoption.

APRIL 30th ~ World Veterinarian Day
We work with a number of amazing veterinarians in Southern Maine, including our very own Dr. Askin, Chief Veterinarian at AWS. We thank them for taking care of not only our shelter pets, but also the pets in our communities. Healthy pets are happy pets!
SPRING CLEANING
There are many household items that can benefit our animals.
Please consider donating your unwanted items to AWS!

DONATE TO THE YARD SALE
Our annual yard sale will be May 14th on Hearthstone Drive in Kennebunk. If you have household items to contribute (please no clothing, furniture or appliances), contact Sue directly at 207-985-1437. Thank you!

DONATE TO THE ANTIQUE SHOW
We are looking for vintage or high-quality items to fill our booth at the Kennebunk Antique Show & Sale the weekend of August 6th-7th at Kennebunk High School. Volunteers Fran and Liz spend countless hours collecting items to prepare for the show. We seek glassware, china, pottery, small articles of furniture, framed prints and other antiques. Fun and unique items such as toys and games from the 1950s or quirky kitchen decor are especially popular. If you have items to contribute, please contact Fran at 207-985-3721 or Liz at 207-967-4962. Thank you!

DONATE A VEHICLE
Most any vehicle is accepted, including cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles and RVs! Vehicles do not need to be in new or even running condition but they must have an engine and be towable. Your vehicle will be sold at auction or to salvage based on condition...with proceeds coming back to AWS! Please visit our Frequently Asked Questions to learn how easy it is to donate your vehicle!
