In honor of Black History Month, the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta would like to recognize local leaders. We asked each leader how they make a difference. Here is what they had to say...

ISB Speaker of the Year

“Making a difference” means a passionate commitment to striving for excellence in everything that is good. As an ISB speaker, I love the work we are doing through our presentations: connecting with diverse audiences, generating constructive dialogues, and building bridges of understanding. I am proud of the ISB's Leadership Institute and how we are working with emerging leaders to provide them with skill sets that will help them in their respective leadership journeys.

A core pillar of Islam is helping others. As a first-generation college graduate and Muslim woman, my life and spiritual experiences have divinely placed me on a journey to use the education I gained to help other first-generation students thrive in life. Being recognized by the ISB as an influential Muslim strengthens my journey to help others.

What does it mean to make a difference? As an artist and writer, it's great to be in a space where I can offer my unique perspective as an African American Muslim woman. Through the arts, I'm able to use visual and literary means to communicate. Art has a powerful way of transforming culture and Muslim artists have so much to offer the world in terms of understanding and compassion.

As an Imam I enjoy making a difference at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport giving the Muslim Friday sermon. The Friday or Jummah prayers and sermon held at the world's busiest airport are attended by airport employees and travelers. I am proud to say that Atlanta is only one of a few airports offering such a service around the country. I

appreciate how the ISB has been working with the airport to schedule the Friday prayers over the last 11 years.

Making a difference to me means contributing and making a significant impact within communities and/or with individuals whom I encounter. Making a difference involves facilitating or bringing about change. Anyone can make a difference if they possess the will and passion to do so.

For me, making a difference is giving the best of yourself in order for others to benefit from. People contribute in many way s and when someone gives the best of themselves, those contributions are all equal.

ISB does such phenomenal work for the city of Atlanta. To be able to work closely with ISB is really a blessing for me. I enjoy how the ISB brings different groups together that otherwise may not have the opportunity to get to know one another. I can't imagine an Atlanta now without the ISB.
