Almighty God,
Thank you for the beauty of nature that surrounds me. Help me pause to appreciate the gift of your creation this day: for the stately trees that dance in the light breeze, the squirrels that scramble across my path, the dogs that stop to inspect wherever their noses lead them, the crows that do not flit away as I walk by. As I reflect on these simple joys, help each one of us to do our part to protect your gift of this irreplaceable environment in which we live.
Amen.
This week, as we continue our centennial celebration, we will bring you the beauty and serenity of the various gardens found throughout the sanctuary.
Which garden is your favorite?
Today:The Christus Garden
The Christus Garden
The Christus Garden is located on The Grotto's lower level, near the plaza. There are several benches for you to sit and reflect, pray or simply rest.
The Christus Statue
This immense bronze statue of Jesus carrying the cross was cast in Gesslingen, Wurttemburg, Germany, in 1931 by Professor Pruszinski.
The statue is the centerpiece the Christus Garden, which is a natural garden full of native shrubs, ferns, and giant evergreens.
Spring Blooms in the Christus Garden
This garden is home to many rhododendrons and other flowering shrubs. Below is a photo of a rhododendron that had been the largest one on the property. Sadly, it was damaged by a falling tree during the Centennial storm in January and had to be cut back. Fortunately, much of the shrub survived, and blooms still abound in the spring in the garden.
Your Sanctuary of Peace
All are welcome to come and sit in this beautiful garden, which is located on the lower level at The Grotto. The lower level is free to all throughout the year.
Wine Tasting at The Grotto
Saturday, July 13
2-5 p.m.
The Grotto Conference Center
Join us for an afternoon of wine tasting, followed by a guided tour through our Upper Gardens.
Chillable Reds have become incredibly popular over the last several years and are perfect for summer sipping in the sun. Chillable Reds are lighter in tannins, making them enjoyable to those who typically shy away from red wine. This class will include a flight of six wines, a hearty selection of snacks, and a guided tour of our Upper Gardens to end the afternoon.
