City of Hillsboro receives Green Business Award
In recognition of the City of Hillsboro's commitment to environmental sustainability, Washington County presented Mayor Steve Callaway with the Green Business Award. The City is unique among the six 2016 awardees in that it was certified at the Gold level, earning the highest number of points so far of any organization. Highlights of the City's sustainability practices include:
- Collecting food waste at the Hillsboro Civic Center and Hillsboro Brookwood Library.
- Recycling batteries, cell phones, electronic devices and special plastics.
- Offsetting over 35 percent of energy use with solar energy and purchased green power.
- Reducing energy use in City facilities by over 20 percent since 2009.
