Besides being the automobile capitol of the world, Michigan has 3,288 miles of coastline - the longest freshwater coastline in the United States and second only to Alaska in total miles of coastline. Michigan is loaded with lakes, sandy beaches, quaint lighthouses, majestic waterfalls and even historic shipwrecks. Its name comes from the Ojibwe word mishigami, meaning "large water" or "large lake."

People have lived in the land now called Michigan for at least 12,000 years. The area was first occupied by a succession of Native American tribes over thousands of years. Eleven Native American tribes still live in Michigan today. In 1805, Michigan became a U.S. territory. Settlers began pouring in around 1825 due to the newly built Erie Canal making travel across the country much easier. Just before 1900, automakers Ransom E. Olds (as in Oldsmobile) and Henry Ford built some of the first cars in Detroit. From Motor City to plentiful beaches, today's Michigan has something for everyone!
