WHISKEY

Whiskey is Quarter Horse/Arabian stallion that came to AAE last month when his elderly owner passed away after an extended illness. We were told he is 7-8 years old, though we think he’s probably a bit older. He came with an older stallion; we'll share more about him, next. These are the two guys that were with Maia and Portia that we provided feed for until they could be transported to AAE, as soon as we could set-up adequate quarantine/housing for stallions. Their owner passed, and the need to transfer became even more urgent.

We don't usually take stallions, and we weren't going to take these two until we saw them. Besides their condition, these boys were tied to stakes on about 15' ropes, and the two mares had been in adjoining paddocks. We had to set-up paddocks suitable for stallions for quarantine and housing, but we got it done.

Whiskey was mostly a gentleman, though we were told we had to watch out for him. He definitely has some studly tendencies, but for pick-up and transport, he was soft, sweet, and scared, especially loading into the trailer, though he loaded slowly, he loaded willingly.

Once at AAE, he was started on an alfalfa diet (consistent with UCD’s protocol for refeeding malnourished horses). He's a handful. As soon as he stabilizes and gains a bit of weight, he will be castrated and have hoof and dental care, vaccines, deworming, and a microchip. Once done, he'll continue handling/evaluation before he's available for adoption.

Until he is ready for adoption, Whiskey needs a monthly sponsor (or a team of sponsors) to help support his care costs and gelding. Learn more about becoming a monthly sponsor or make a one time donation to help horses like Whiskey.

It’s hard to imagine anyone ever allowing a horse (or other animal) to get to this condition. It's not acceptable. In this case, these horses were the spouse's (Mr.) horses, and he left the horses with his ailing wife (Mrs). It's bad enough to leave an ailing spouse, but imagine being the ailing spouse and being left with the responsibility of caring for four horses, one a difficult stallion, one a very senior mare, and another a difficult mare. Mr. did not offer any financial support for the horses to Mrs. to provide for the horses. Once her health began to decline, she was unable to sustain them. Her family tried to help but they did not have the knowledge nor resources to care for horses. While ailing, Mrs. and family's attempts to rehome the horses failed before AAE was asked to help. Mrs. ultimately had open heart surgery, then passed away just a few weeks later. (It is difficult rehome backyard bred stallions, very senior horses, and untrained horses, as we know). Sadly, this was the result. It shouldn't happen, but we see it all too often.

Thank you for your support helping horses each and every day!

Your support makes it possible to help horses

like Whiskey, Maia, and Portia when they need it most.
