The Monastrell grape is a varietal originating in Spain and grown in many regions around the world including France, Australia, California, Washington and Texas. In the U.S. it is more commonly known by its French name, Mourvédre.
Monastrell is considered a somewhat tannic grape due to its thick skin, which also makes it ideal for warm climates. This particular wine has somewhat concentrated flavors because a portion of the juice was removed from the skins prior to fermentation to make a rosé, leaving less juice with more skins. This gives it fuller body and in my opinion, more intense flavor.
This wine presents aromas of dark fruit, chocolate, pepper and a hint of violet. On the pallet you may taste blackberry, spice, herbs, with some earthy and gamey flavors that allow it pair very well with grilled beef or wild game. As the wine is maturing, it also appears to be expressing more of the fruitiness that it may have lacked early on.
Since its release in January, the Monastrell has quickly become very popular and our best seller. Unfortunately, it is a very small batch and we're most likely going to sell out of it within the next couple of months.
