The San Antonio Lighthouse hosted a White Cane Awareness Day Celebration at Beautify San Antonio Park on Oct. 14.
The White Cane, painted white to be more easily visible, is a vital mobility tool and a symbol of independence for people with a visual impairment. White Cane Awareness Day also celebrates the achievements of people with a visual impairment.
"When you have a white cane and you're able to get around by yourself, and do things people never thought you could, it is very empowering," said Wendy Walker, White Cane Awareness Day Celebration committee member and president of the National Federation of the Blind San Antonio Chapter.
A special thank you to District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo for reading the City Proclamation and to the Chair of the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities Richard Martinez for reading the State Proclamation.
