White House Releases List of Chinese Products That Will Receive More Favorable Tariff Treatment

Following Chinese President Xi's visit to Washington last week, the White House announced that the US and China have agreed on more favorable tariff treatment for approximately $30 billion in US-China trade. Specifically, the White House released a list of 77 tariff classifications that will now have more favorable tariff treatment. An EXCEL version of this list may be downloaded here.

Importantly, as of this writing, details such as what the more favorable tariff treatment will be, when it will be effective, and how CBP will implement the more favorable tariff treatment, are not yet available. However, importers of Chinese origin goods should review their imports to determine if any of their imports are on this list.

China also released a list of products for which it, too, would improve the tariff treatment of US origin products. The Chinese list also covers about $30 billion in US exports to China, but is much longer than the US list in terms of affected tariff classifications. Exporters to China should also review this list (EXCEL version here), which the White House also posted to the above link, to see if China will now grant more favorable tariff treatment for their exports. As with the US list, implementation details by China are not yet available.

While we will continue to monitor and advise on developments, the information provided in this notice is not legal advice. Importers and exporters are reminded to consult with their customs counsel for advice appropriate to their situation, including whether they are using the correct tariff classification for their imports or exports.
