Above: Trinidadian Edric Connor, was a Black star of stage and screen in 1940s/50s London. He set up his own film production company to tell authentic Black stories, and created a Black and Asian actors agency to get jobs and decent roles in the racist theatre world. He championed African/Caribbean art/culture and recorded and promoted rare folk songs. He directed Claudia Jones first carnival in 1959 and promoted steel pan. He worked with Sidney Poitier, Cy Grant, Robert Mitchum and Rita Hayworth. The African Odysseys programme at BFI Southbank has been screening amazing films from the African Diaspora once a month plus Q&A since 2007. The films are curated by a collective of grass roots activists including Black History Walks. The hundreds of dramas, documentaries and talks have informed and educated tens of thousands of people over the last 15 years. It is the only such programme in the country.

The massive anti racist demonstration took place on March 2nd 1981 with 20,000 people walking from New Cross to central London.The protest was triggered by the New Cross Fire in which 13 young Black people died in a suspected racist attack.
