Village of Whitefish Bay Official Weekly Newsletter
Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley

I want to thank the WFB Civic Foundation for putting on an excellent 4th of July festival and for being nimble when the weather turned soggy. And of course, thanks to Sendik's for hosting the fireworks every year!

This week, join your neighbors for another Village Band concert at Schoolhouse Park on Wednesday at 7pm.

Lastly, how can we make our Silver Spring district successful? By attending events like the Sidewalk Sale, next weekend, July 15th and 16th. See details below.

Have a great week! -kb

Why Is The Village Hall Phone Ringing?
What is the new yard waste collection schedule? As of May 23, 2022, yard waste is now collected weekly on your normal refuse/recycling pickup day. Please make sure all yard waste bags and reusable containers are out in your parkway by 7:00 a.m. on that day. If you receive refuse and recycling pickup at the curb, bags and containers must also be placed at least three feet from your refuse and recycling carts. Yard waste bags or containers must weigh less than 50 pounds. Please remember that grass clippings are prohibited. To check your collection day, click here. Please note: There is no change to brush/chipper collection.

When is the next brush chipper collection? Brush will next be collected by Village crews this week (Beginning July 11). Brush should be placed in the parkway between the curb and the sidewalk.

Block Parties in Whitefish Bay:

The Village encourages and supports block parties as a way of promoting friendly neighborhoods—and they have become a popular local tradition! To request a block party on your street, simply follow the steps below.

  1. Fill out a block party request form, available on the Village website. Please send in your request at least two weeks before your requested party date.
  2. Bring the completed form to Village Hall (5300 N Marlborough Dr), or email it to Erin Aeschbacher, at [email protected].

We will review your request and send you a letter outlining whether you have been approved or denied. Certain busy streets are not permitted to be blocked off. These include Lake Drive, Oakland just south of Hampton Road, Silver Spring Drive, and Marlborough Drive. Please note: The resident applying for the block party is responsible for inviting everyone on their block and notifying them of the street closure.

If available, Village barricades will be delivered to your block the Friday before the block party and picked up the following Monday. In the event that all Village barricades are in use, you will have to supply your own barricades; please do not use cars. If the party continues after dark, all barricades must have lights in some fashion as to pass on-site inspection by the Police Department.

We hope you can spend some quality time with your friends and neighbors this summer!

NSHD Healthy Highlight 7/06/22: Tobacco is Changing

Vaping and E-Cigarettes
Vaping and E-Cigarettes are a health risk for people of all ages; however, youth are especially vulnerable to use of electronic tobacco products.

According to Wisconsin Department of Health Services: “In Wisconsin, 11 percent of middle schoolers have tried electronic tobacco products, and 4 percent of middle schoolers are current users. Those numbers jump by the time kids reach high school. Today, 32 percent of high schoolers have tried e-cigarettes, and 20 percent consider themselves current users.”

  • Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a potent chemical compound that makes cigarettes, chew, and other tobacco products highly addictive.
  • The industry's most popular e-cigarette pod contains as much nicotine as 20 cigarettes.
  • E-liquids can contain heavy metals (nickel, tin, lead).
  • Diacetyl, a flavoring found in many e-liquids, has been linked to lung disease.

Many kids vape because of the flavors.
Sweet and trendy flavors contribute to e-cigarette popularity among youth: “80 percent of young e-cigarette users said they used e-cigarettes “because they come in flavors I like,” and 95 percent of Wisconsin middle schoolers say they wouldn't use an unflavored product.”

Often e-cigarettes look like common items found in daily life and may be overlooked. The latest trend?
  • Bright disposable e-cigarettes designed to look like slim highlighters
  • E-cigarettes designed to look like USB flash drives, credit cards, small cell phones, or guitar picks.
