Historical Tidbit:
Corthell Elementary School
| |
"The Corthell School, 168 Whitman Avenue (1908) replaced an earlier ca. 1887 school, referred to as the old Corthell School, which
burned on February 8, 1908. A special town meeting was called in April 1908 to vote to immediately replace the earlier two-room
school with a larger, four-room building. Approximately $14,500 was allocated to rebuild on the same site and furnish the building.
Boston architect Charles A. Brigham was hired to prepare the plans for the building based on the Gurney School, 127 Warren.
Avenue, which he designed in 1903. (Brigham was a famous architect; he designed the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Christian Science Temple) The (school) building was constructed by local builder Clarence Allen Randall (1852–1947). The new Corthell School opened in October 1908 and served as a public elementary school for about 45 years.
In 1953, three new elementary schools were constructed to alleviate overcrowding in the older school buildings, and the Corthell School became the headquarters for the Whitman School Administration Department and the Superintendent’s Office. The building is still owned by the Town of Whitman...."
" The school was named for the Corthell family, a long-standing family in Whitman. Perhaps the most well-known member of the family is William P. Corthell (1814–1890), who served on the board of selectmen, was the moderator at town meetings from 1848 until 1874, and was a trustee of the Abington Saving Bank for 37 years. When Whitman split off from Abington, Corthell served as the assessor and overseer of the poor, as well as an elected selectman for the town. Members of the Corthell family resided in Whitman through at least the middle of the 20th century."

Climate Can Do:
Doing our part to decrease Nano-plastics in the environment
To do our part, we need to stop disposing of single -use plastics as much as possible. Our throwaway culture affects our drinking water. We often prioritize convenience over consideration of long-term impacts, leading to trash cans filled with plastic and roadways littered with single-use bottles. These plastics break-down over time leaching nano-plastics into our drinking water.
Let's work together to make a change.
Here are some suggestions:
- Replace plastic water bottles with a refillable one
- Bring your own take-out container for restaurant leftovers or frequent restaurants that use earth-friendly containers
- Wash and reuse any plastic containers you get with purchases
- Purchase drinks in cans or glass, not plastic (That plastic bottle is leaching nano-plastics into your drink)
- Purchase laundry and dish detergent in Pods or Sheets instead of plastic bottles
Together, we can do it!

Dr. Chris Jones: Attraction or Attention | |
"Is it the Law of Attraction, or are you just paying more attention to things?
Can we actually attract things to ourselves, or are they always there, and we just need to adjust what we are paying attention to in our lives?
This one is about reflecting, focusing, and realizing we have what we need for what we want already. We just have to pay attention to it."
It's all about reflection and action. Podcast about Wishful Thinking with Dr. Christopher Jones

Family humor HAS to feature a good dose of Erma Bombeck.
Mum used to read Bombeck often to the 9 of us on long car rides. Many of her observations of family in the 70's still ring true today.
“Have you any idea how many children it takes to turn off one light in the kitchen ?Three. It takes one to say 'What light?' and two more to say 'I didn't turn it on.”
~ Erma Bombeck
“I feel very blessed to have two wonderful, healthy children who keep me completely grounded, sane and throw up on my shoes just before I go to an awards show just so I know to keep it real.” — Reese Witherspoon
“When a child is locked in the bathroom with water running and he says he's doing nothing but the dog is barking, call 911.”
~ Erma Bombeck
“Siblings: children of the same parents, each of whom is perfectly normal until they get together.” ~ Sam Levenson
| |
And one more:
“When my kids become wild and unruly, I use a nice, safe playpen. When they're finished, I climb out.” ~ Erma Bombeck
Hope you had a great family week, all!
~ Jacquie
