Whitman Boy Scouts Prepare for Scouting for Food Drive

This weekend, scouts from Whitman’s Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Troops and Cub Scout Pack will be handing out flyers for the annual Scouting for Food event, an honored Boy Scout tradition that encourages residents to give back.

Scouting for Food is one of the largest community service projects organized by the BSA, dating back to 1985 when it was first launched in St. Louis. The initiative quickly grew into a nationwide effort, with millions of scouts participating each year to collect food for those in need.

Whitman’s scouting community has consistently rallied to support the cause, with last year’s efforts filling an entire truck with food donations. In hopes that the community's generosity will exceed last year's contribution, the scouts look forward to their contribution this year. The event teaches young scouts the value of service and reinforces the principles of leadership and responsibility. The campaign is a reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

On Sat, Nov 2 , 9a-12p

  • Scouts will return to collect non-perishable items
  • Leave donations in shopping bags for pickup on your front step or porch
  • For those unable, donations can be dropped off at the First Congregational Church until 2p

Historical Tidbit: Life in the 1500's

Did you know that the early houses had thatched roofs, thick straw piled high, with no wood underneath.

It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice and bugs) lived in the roof.

When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying 'It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

Whitman Public Library to Participate in Booktober Library Crawl

On October 7th, the Old Colony Library Network (OCLN) began its second annual Booktober Library Crawl. Running until November 2nd, 21 libraries in the OCLN, including the Whitman Public Library will be participating. Regional Water Survey Plan

The Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC), the regional planning agency for the greater Brockton and Plymouth areas, has partnered with consulting firm CDM Smith, the 17 municipalities in our region, and other stakeholders to develop a Regional Water Plan. This collaborative plan will help ensure safe, sustainable water now and into the future.

Your views are important to OCPC. Please take just ten minutes to complete this anonymous OCPC Water Plan Survey - it will close soon. OCPC will use what we learn from you to inform development of the plan. Only with your help can we develop a plan best suited for communities in our region. Thank you for your input!

You can learn more about this project at www.oldcolonyplanning.org/waterplan/. If you have any questions, please contact Joanne Zygmunt at jzygmunt@ocpcrpa.org or (774) 539-5059.

Climate Can Do:

3 Tips for a Sustainable Halloween

With spooky season underway, it is important to remember how our choices impact the environment around us. According to Duke University, a 2019 study found that discarded Halloween costumes alone generated 2,000 tons of plastic waste each year. Luckily there are many quick and easy tricks to help you cut down your eco-footprint.

Recycle Costumes and Decor

When it comes to Halloween, some things never go out of style. From spiders to skeletons to witch cauldrons -- keep your "old" decor to use again next year and save time, money, and the planet!

You might consider shopping at thrift and consignment shops or try something new and DIY your own costume! The cape from one year's vampire costume might be the finishing touch for next year's superhero. A pillow case can be easily decorated at home and makes a great trick-or-treat bag.

Maximize Pumpkin Usage

When pumpkins are tossed in the trash and buried, they create methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Using every part of your pumpkin prevents this.

Pumpkin seeds, flesh, and rind can be used in a ton of delicious recipes such as pumpkin bread, pudding, pie, and more. For inspiration, you can look online or visit Delish.

Once the season's over, compost your pumpkin, mixing it oxygen while it breaks down decreases methane emissions and improves your garden's nutrient-rich soil.

Shop Sustainably

Shopping locally is also an easy way to limit waste. Support local farmers this season and buy locally-grown pumpkins; and shop local or fair trade chocolatiers.

Adventure

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

“The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.”

~ Oprah Winfrey

“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am - a reluctant enthusiast....a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive..." ~ Edward Abbey

Everyday I work to make the BuzzAround better... and everyday I take moments to enjoy, to breathe the air, to swirl in a dance, or visually absorb the color of a leaf. It has been challenging and wonderful; life as a half-hearted fanatic~ Jacquie
