Promoting Inclusion at Whitman Hanson High School
On Feb 14, the Friday before February break, students at Whitman Hanson High School gathered in the gymnasium for one of their traditions of promoting inclusion. They celebrate the Special Olympic Athletes and support their Best Buddy Groups.
In the gymnasium, the students gathered to watch an exhibition inter-squad game between the Best Buddies. Our Buddies did not disappoint during these games. It was a great way to kick off the February break for the school district.

The Town of Whitman got its name from the Whitman family. John Whitman was the first Whitman to settle in Abington.
Jared Whitman came after John. He was involved in many aspects of the town of South Abington. He was part of the Plymouth County Agricultural Society, a selectman (nine years), Justice of Peace, and a delegate to revise the Massachusetts Constitution. He was also one of the first to establish a Sabbath school for the town of South Abington.
Susanna Whitman and Jared Whitman had a son named Augustus Whitman.
Augustus Whitman was a businessman and a farmer. He was wealthy like his father Jared. He had a company called Whitman and Barnes Manufacturing that manufactured mowing knives. When riding in his orchard in Leominster, he was thrown from the back of his trailer and died an untimely death.
With the money he has for the town, The park was created.

Climate Can-Do:
Help Generate Less Winter Waste!
After the white snow engulfs much of the green around us, there are still ways to have a positive impact on the environment. Here are some precautions you can take to waste less and emit less pollution this winter season:
- Bring a reusable mug: reduce plastic waste by checking out which local coffee shops will fill your clean, personal mug. Some shops even offer small bring-your-own-cup discounts.
- Reduce your use of chemical deicers like salt. Salt may melt away ice on roads, but it also introduces harmful chemicals into bodies of water, including sources of drinking water. Try mixing a smaller amount of salt with sand to help to increase friction.
-
Turn your thermostat down a few degrees. Waste less energy and save on your power bill. Chilly? Keep an extra layer of clothes handy and keep your blinds and curtains open during the day to let sunlight warm your home. If your home feels drafty, arrange a free home energy assessment from Mass Save. (We all contribute to this fund in our electric bill.)
Stay warm this winter and look for small ways you can have a positive impact on our environment!

Compassion
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.” ~ Plato
“No one has ever become poor by giving.”
~ Anne Frank
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” ~ Dalai Lama XIV
“Some people think only intellect counts: knowing how to solve problems, knowing how to get by, knowing how to identify an advantage and seize it. But the functions of intellect are insufficient without courage, love, friendship, compassion, and empathy.” ~ Dean Koontz
"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." ~ Maya Angelou
"I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures." ~ Lao Tzu

Without compassion for ourselves & others, this world will swallow us whole. Know your needs and take care of them. (In airline speak: Put your own oxygen mask on first.) AND be quick to forgive others.
These days we all need more: more self-love AND more grace from each other.
Compassion my dear friends, compassion ~ Jacquie
