Historical Tidbit: The First Bell Caster

Aaron Hobart was the first bell caster in the colonies. He lived in the town of Abington, when it encompassed the land that is now Whitman. He lived from 1729 to 1808.

He established his bell casting business in 1769. The first bell that he cast was for the Second Meeting House of the First Parish church of Abington. It was traditional back then for the people to throw silver dollars into the casting basin to give the bell a sweeter tone.

That first bell remained in the Second church until 1819 when the church was torn down. After that, it was placed in the Third Meeting House, called Hatherly Hall.

Having a bell caster in America meant that people no longer had to send bells to be recast in England, and could get bells made in America.

The image above is of a colonial bell made by Paul Revere, the famous American bell caster.

Regional Water Plan - Public Meetings

The Old Colony Planning Council will be hosting three public meetings to share the Draft Regional Water Plan and invite feedback from the community.

There will be two in-person meetings and one virtual:

Mon,, April 28, 6:30-8p - Plymouth Town Hall, Great Hall

Thurs May 1, 6:30-7:30p - Virtually via Zoom - Register at Zoom.com

Tue, May 6, 6:30-8p– Brockton Public Library, Lingos Auditorium

Visit oldcolonyplanning.org/waterplan for more information and to read the draft plan.

Water is essential to our health, homes, environment, and economy. In the Old Colony region, safe and reliable water supports everything from daily life to housing, agriculture, and business development. But pressures on our water system are growing—aging infrastructure, PFAS contamination, climate change, and ecological stress all demand a coordinated response.

The Old Colony Regional Water Plan is that response. Developed through more than a year of collaboration with 17 municipalities, tribal representatives, water suppliers, environmental groups, and residents, the plan lays out both immediate actions and long-term strategies to secure our region’s water future.

It addresses urgent needs like PFAS treatment and new wells and looks ahead to regional solutions such as desalinated water, MWRA connections, and drought coordination. The plan emphasizes flexibility and collaboration, and it reflects our shared commitment to building a resilient, sustainable, and economically vibrant future. Provide your feedback and attend these meetings!

Whitman PD Gives Students a Ride to School

"Today [Wed, Apr 16] Whitman Police SRO/DARE Officer Mark Poirier drove three Duval School 5th graders to school as one of them was the winner of a fundraiser raffle.

Cody Waszkiewicz (red hoodie) was the raffle winner and he had Caden Bandini (gray hoodie)& Jack Spillane (blue hoodie) as his guest.

Officer Poirier showed the boys the cruiser and its contents and let them use the lights and siren.

Caden attempted to bribe Ofc. Poirier with Dunkin’ Donuts to let them skip school today, but Ofc. Poirier said no and fittingly put Caden in the back. Also, Ofc. Poirier doesn’t like donuts.

They cruised around town for a bit and then went to school where they were greeted by their principal, teachers, and classmates!

A good way to start the day!"
