Cops For Kids With Cancer
On May 31, the Whitman Police Department posted a heartwarming message in support of Cops For Kids With Cancer, Inc., a charity organization dedicated to assisting the families of children diagnosed with cancer.
"We were honored to host Cops For Kids With Cancer, Inc. this afternoon at our station. Former East Bridgewater Police Officer Tom Reed presented a gift to a young Whitman Family whose 7-month-old, Wyatt, has been battling cancer. Wyatt has had several operations and chemotherapy treatments and has more treatments ahead. Despite all of this, Wyatt is doing amazingly well!!
Rebecca (Mom) and Dennis (Dad) are very hopeful and optimistic that Wyatt is on the right track and will be running at the playground soon."
We at BuzzAround wish Wyatt and his family well. If you would like to help families such as Wyatt's, please visit copsforkidswithcancer.org.

Printing a Family Business in Whitman
Harry B. Harding started a printing business in Whitman after leaving his sports career. He started the business with Leon Knox.
Mr. Harding bought a building for his printing business in 1909. The building was almost burned down in January of 1910 due to a fire that wiped out the famous Village Hall.
In 1926, Mr. Harding’s son, Franklin K. Harding, joined the business. Mr. Harding died at the impressive age of 79.
Franklin K. Harding eventually sold the business due to his poor health. He sold it to John D. Campbell in January of 1966. Mr. Campbell was the husband of Franklin's daughter. Harding Print is the 2nd oldest family-owned business in Whitman. 2nd only to DB, It is now located at 15 Colebrook Blvd.

Climate Can-Do: Thrifting a Healthier Planet
Fast fashion may be easy and cheap, but did you know that in the United States, nearly 13 million tons of clothing end up in the landfill each year? Understanding the environmental impact of purchasing choices has us looking for solutions.
Benefits of Thrifting
- By donating and purchasing second-hand clothes, you are helping reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfills. With more and more clothes being made out of synthetic materials, textiles are taking hundreds of years to decompose. Buying second-hand doesn’t just extend the life cycle of clothes, but also prevents toxic materials from entering our ecosystems.
- Thrifting helps reduce wasted resources. Clothing production requires thousands of gallons of water. For example, a single pair of jeans uses about 1,800 gallons of water in its production process.
- If the sustainable benefits weren’t enough, thrifting also saves money. Second-hand stores sell their donations at a discounted price. You can find vintage, good-quality clothes for less. There’s also a large variety to choose from, and maybe you’ll find your new signature piece!
Alternatives to Thrifting
If buying second-hand isn’t for you, please do your part in keeping clothes out of landfills.
- Donate your used clothes: homeless shelters and youth homes, as well as thrift stores, get your clothes to individuals who need them most.
- Repurposing your clothes is a good way of being a conscious consumer, but it can also be a fun craft and a money saver. For example, cut up old shirts and use them as cleaning rags, or consider embroidering an old tank top and giving it a new life.
- Learning how to repair clothes also extends their life cycle. Darning socks, sewing a rip, or mending holes helps your favorite pieces stay in your closet instead of the dump.
Leading a thrifty lifestyle helps reduce waste, but it can also be a fun way of rediscovering new styles or old clothes you forgot about.

Connection
There are some people who carry wisdom. I search out Brené Brown because I have struggled so in relationships. So I share her now, knowing her words will help all who choose to listen.
“You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” ~ Brené Brown
“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” ~ Brené Brown
“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.” ~ Brené Brown
“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness.” ~ Brené Brown

And here is the TED that introduced her to the world. I hope you have a lovely week of connection.
