Help Shape the Future of Whitman’s Open Space and Recreation
The Old Colony Planning Council (OCPC) is partnering with the Town of Whitman to update its Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP), a critical tool for preserving and enhancing the town’s natural and recreational resources. The goal of the OSRP is to evaluate Whitman’s open spaces, identify recreational opportunities, and develop strategies to address the town’s evolving needs. By updating this plan, the town aims to ensure that its outdoor spaces meet the expectations and priorities of the community.
Currently, a public survey is live, giving Whitman residents the chance to share their opinions on the town's open space and recreation needs. The survey seeks input on key issues such as the strengths and weaknesses of existing recreational facilities, open space priorities, and opportunities for improvement.

Residents’ feedback will play a vital role in shaping future decisions about parks, trails, and other outdoor spaces, helping the town build a plan that reflects the needs of everyone in the community.
To get involved and have your voice heard, complete the online survey and provide your valuable input. This is a chance to influence the future of Whitman’s recreational and natural resources, ensuring they remain accessible and enjoyable for all. Visit the Whitman OSRP Survey to participate and help shape the future of Whitman’s outdoor spaces!

Preserving Whitman’s Rich History:
How the Community Keeps Its Legacy Alive
Our town is steeped in history, and thanks to the efforts of the Whitman Historical Commission, its rich past is being carefully preserved for future generations. From the beautifully designed Whitman Park—a product of Frederick Law Olmsted’s renowned landscape architecture—to the historic Whitman Town Hall, the town’s history is visible everywhere.
The Whitman Historical Commission plays a crucial role in protecting these landmarks and ensuring that Whitman’s heritage is maintained. They are also responsible for guiding the restoration of key sites and artifacts, and their dedication allows residents and visitors alike to connect with the town’s history through tours, exhibits, and special events, like our upcoming 150th Anniversary Celebration.
One of the town’s hidden gems is the Whitman Town Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Whitman’s past through its collection of artifacts, photos, and documents. The museum, operated by volunteers, provides residents with a hands-on way to learn about the town’s history.
Preservation efforts like these don’t just safeguard the past—they also strengthen the community by fostering a sense of pride and connection. The Commission regularly hosts events and programs aimed at engaging the public and encouraging participation in local preservation projects. Residents can support these efforts by attending events or volunteering to help maintain Whitman’s historical sites.
To get involved or learn more, visit the Whitman Historical Commission and check out the latest updates on preservation projects and events. You can also visit the Whitman Town Museum to see firsthand the work being done to preserve Whitman’s history.

Compassion
"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." ~ Dalai Lama
"Our uniqueness, our individuality, and our life experience molds us into fascinating beings. I hope we can embrace that. I pray we may all challenge ourselves to delve into the deepest resources of our hearts to cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, acceptance, tolerance, and compassion. We are all in this life together."
~ Linda Thompson
"In my view, the best of humanity is in our exercise of empathy and compassion. It's when we challenge ourselves to walk in the shoes of someone whose pain or plight might seem so different than yours that it's almost incomprehensible." ~Sarah McBride
"In Asian languages, the word for 'mind' and the word for 'heart' are same. So if you're not hearing mindfulness in some deep way as heartfulness, you're not really understanding it. Compassion and kindness towards oneself are intrinsically woven into it. You could think of mindfulness as wise and affectionate attention."
~ Jon Kabat-Zinn
