Tonight, Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered yet another State of the State address, long on slogans and short on solutions. What Michiganders needed was a serious plan to address the real challenges facing our state. What they got instead was a political speech aimed squarely at attacking President Trump and pleasing her national donors.
For seven years, Governor Whitmer has perfected the art of talking while doing nothing. Under her watch, Michigan families are paying more, getting less, and falling further behind neighboring states. Instead of offering a coherent policy agenda, she used her platform tonight the same way she has used it throughout her tenure: to score partisan points and to run interference for the failed Biden–Harris agenda.
The Governor still refuses to acknowledge the long-term damage caused by her catastrophic COVID decisions—decisions that crushed small businesses, kept children out of classrooms longer than almost any other state, and devastated thousands of Michigan families. Her administration enforced some of the harshest and most arbitrary restrictions in the country, while exempting her political allies and selectively enforcing rules that hurt working people the most.
Even today, she still has no accountability, no apology, and no plan to repair the damage.
While Michigan confronts declining population, higher costs, worsening roads, and a struggling business climate, Governor Whitmer offered no meaningful proposals—only recycled talking points and a tired promise to “fight” President Trump. Michiganders need leadership focused on fixing Michigan, not a governor obsessed with national politics and her own ambitions.
Republicans in Michigan are committed to rebuilding this state, strengthening our economy, restoring public safety, empowering parents, and delivering real accountability. Governor Whitmer had another chance tonight to join us in that mission. Instead, she proved once again that her priority is partisan warfare, not the people of Michigan.
Michigan deserves better—and in 2026, voters will have the opportunity to choose real leadership over empty speeches.
