Congratulations to our poms team for placing 3rd in the state competition last weekend. This is the first time a Chicago Public School has placed in the state finals for poms. Congratulations to all of the team members and coaches!

What is the process for class speakers at the school?

In order for a speaker to engage with Whitney Young students they must be an approved Level II volunteer. Prospective volunteers must register with Family and Community Engagement (FACE) by completing the required CPS volunteer application forms and satisfying the requirements of the applicant review process. The application can be found at cps.edu/volunteer. The Whitney Young faculty member or club sponsor will then coordinate the activity.

Is it a policy to be more difficult on giving AP credits as compared to other schools?

Whitney Young offers over 30 AP classes and encourages students to take the AP classes that align with their interests and strengths. There are prerequisites in place for AP classes to insure that students have the needed foundation to be successful in the classes. AP credit is awarded by the college or university students attend after graduation based on the students' scores on the AP exams. For the 2022 school year, Whitney Young proctored 2348 AP exams and over 80% of students earned a passing score of 3 or higher.

Will there be a winter spirit week this year? I know it’s probably a bit late to ask.

Never too late to ask! Spirit weeks are typically coordinated by Student Council or centered around a particular activity. I would suggest reaching out to a Student Council member. If you need to find out who the representatives are, please stop by their bulletin board located in the Red House.

When parents are dropping off their students in the parking lot, sometimes they pull into parking spaces to do so and it makes it more complicated to get into a parking space for people who actually need to use them.

We all have to work together during arrival and dismissal. The first priority is safety. Please follow the procedures when dropping off in the morning and also be considerate of those seeking to park and make it in the building on time.

Mr. Harris is soliciting questions for the Whitney Young Weekly. He will select and answer questions each week. Note: By submitting your question, you agree that the question and answer will be published and sent to the whole school community. Not all questions will be able to be answered/published. Due to the popularity of Harris' Huddle, questions may take at least four weeks to be published. If you have an immediate concern, please contact the Main Office during regular school hours at (773) 534-7500.

National Youth Day

Whitney Young always fosters diversity and inclusiveness, and this was showcased at the National Youth Day event organized by the Consulate General of India, Chicago in NBC tower on January 12th 2023. The event was attended by a wide range of people, which included students of schools & universities and youth professionals. Daksh Vermareddy , 9th grader, represented Whitney Young and its diverse student population. He spoke about the Aksharawali, the club he initiated to explore the rich heritage of India and its ancient wisdom, and the influence of Swami Vivekananda's speech in Chicago on him. He requested the consulate and the Indian government to encourage the diverse student population in Whitney Young with their support, which the authorities noted and responded affirmatively. Join Aksharawali club to take advantage of its activities, lectures from prominent leaders and discussions on Vedic math and sciences, classic literature and philosophy and learn to discover the excellent person within you.
