Allyship Tip: Learn About Junteenth
Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the US, observed on June 19th.
In 1863, after the Emancipation Proclamation, all enslaved African Americans were free in law. However, it was not immediately enforced in Confederate controlled states, where slave owners continued to exploit the lives and labor of Black Americans. On June 19th, 1865, almost 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Texas finally learned they were free. Since then, the day continues to be celebrated in Texas, and gradually spread across the country as a day to commemorate Black Americans' freedom and achievements.

One of our Dolphin parents, Jason Easterly, is organizing the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Freedom Bike Ride on Saturday, June 19, from 12:00-3:00 PM. The ride will begin downtown and ride through some historic Chicago neighborhoods, ending in Bronzeville. You may have seen Jason's feature in the Chicago Tribune last week; if not, read it here. We would love to have a proud Whitney Young squad riding in this Juneteenth celebration, in recognition of the courageous efforts of the Freedom Riders in 1961, and in support of continued, focused efforts to end racism and oppression in our communities. Over 250 people joined last year's ride, and it is Jason's goal to double that number this year. If you are able to join the event, you may register here. Registration is free! Monetary donations are welcome on the website, and proceeds will be shared with the organization My Block, My Hood, My City.
