Whitney Young Weekly During Spring Break

The Whitney Young Weekly will not be published on March 24 or March 31. The Weekly will then resume on Sunday, April 7.

Math Team Wins Regionals!

The Whitney Young Math Team won its regional competition on Saturday, February 24 and has qualified for the ICTM State Finals in April. Special recognition goes to the following students for earning perfect scores on the following contests: Geometry: David Chen, Nathan Fournier, Samuel Tan; Algebra 2: Yinuo Huang; Precalculus: Henry Guo, Justin Li, and Steven Song. Good luck to the team as they get ready for the state championship competition! Congratulations to all of the Math Team members and the coaches!

MathCounts Team Advances to State

On February 3, the Whitney Young Mathcounts team competed at the Chicago Chapter competition and won first place! The team of Isaac Chan-Osborn (7th), YuHan ChenHe (8th), Ethan Jiao (8th), and Christopher Sakaliyski (8th) all qualified for the State competition. Grant Liu (8th), Yinhong Liu (8th), Mason Qiao (8th), and Iliyan Shariff (8th) also qualified for the State competition based on their individual scores. Christopher was the highest scoring student at the site. Congratulations to the team and we wish them success at the State competition on March 9!

Academic Decathlon Wins State!

The Academic Decathlon team brought home Whitney Young's 21st consecutive state championship this past Saturday at UIC. Seniors Taihei Eastwood and Gabe Ratner won gold medals for their overall performances. The Silver went to senior Leon Cao. Juniors Sara Jiang and Vincent Li took home bronzes. Gold medal subject postings include:

  • Economics (Leon Cao, Yiheng Gao, Taihei Eastwood)

  • Additionally, junior Cris Vazquez and senior Gabe Ratner both were selected for speech showcase.

The team advances to this year's national competition in Pittsburgh, PA. April 24th-27th. If interested in joining next year's Academic Decathlon team, fill out this informational form. Tryouts will be held in May.

Freshman Mentors

Freshmen Mentors are positive, caring, outgoing Whitney Young sophomores, juniors, and seniors. We are looking for students who will commit to seriously mentoring a freshmen division. Freshman Mentor applications will be available starting Monday, 3/11 and are due on Monday, 3/18, by 3:30pm. No late applications will be accepted. Applications will be available on each class's Google Classroom.

- 32 Rising Sophomores

Best in State!

We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Fallon Perkins, the talented captain of Guys & Dolls Dance Company. At last month's IHSDF Student Choreography Competition, Fallon's piece "Defining Our Destiny", captured the spotlight and earned the prestigious "Best in State" title. This achievement is a testament to Fallon's creativity, dedication, and exceptional choreographic skills. Join us in cheering on Fallon and her fellow company members as they prepare to showcase their talents at the Student Choreography Stage Showcase on April 5th in Barrington, Illinois. We couldn't be prouder to have Guys & Dolls represented among the best in the state. Go Dolphins!

Science Bowl Wins Regionals

On Saturday March 2nd, the Science Bowl Team composed of Stephen Luo, Andrew Kozintsev, Evan Assmus, Miller Jackson, and Joshua Liu beat out 12 other teams to win the Chicago Regional Science Bowl Competition. This win secures them an all expense paid trip to Washington DC at the end of April to compete in the National Competition.

Family Culture Night

Get ready to experience a celebration of diversity at Whitney Young Family Culture Night! Mark your calendars for April 19th! The event will be held in Blue and Red House from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm and will feature a wide variety of cuisines, performances, and games from your very own Whitney Young cultural clubs! This is a potluck event, so we encourage all attendees to bring a dish representing their cultural heritage! We also encourage all attendees to wear their cultural attire! And the best part is that it's FREE! Please fill out the RSVP form if you wish to attend. This is your ticket to Cultural Night! Medicine Bottles Needed for Art

If you have any empty medication bottles you are willing to donate for art supplies we would greatly appreciate it! Please bring them to the main office with attention to Ms. Wax or put them in her mailbox. Thanks for your generosity and supporting the Arts!

Deaf Academic Bowl Competes at Regionals

The WY Deaf Academic Bowl competed this past weekend in the Midwest Regional competition which they qualified for earlier this year. Though they did not bring home the gold, they competed very well and enjoyed the chance to meet Deaf and hard of hearing students and adults from over 15 states. Congrats to our Deaf Dolphins!

Congratulations and Bon Voyage

Congratulations to the next class of Global Navigators! Thanks to CIEE, $73,568 in scholarships have been awarded to 17 of 22 Whitney Young students who will be studying abroad this summer. Elijah Alhambra, Henry Arvan, Nathan Arvan, Veronica Beyler, Mabel Brown, Jaden Chan, Beni Cwiakala, Angeline Delfin, Victoria Dorman, Kelsey Kuenster, Charlene Li, Huiyan Lin, Marcela Matallana, Isabella Montes De Oca, Lila Pierce, Mya Ramirez, Richard Reyes, Kayla Riepe, Julia Rodriguez, Lyric Rodriguez, and Noah Rodriguez will be studying in China, Estonia, France, Japan, Portugal, and Spain. Great job, Dolphins, and bon voyage!

Boys Track Breaks School Record

The Boys Track & Field 4x800 Meter Relay team broke the indoor school record on Monday March 4th at North Central College in Naperville running a time of 7:58.10. Relay Members pictured are Silas Moody - Jr., Kendall Easterly - Sr., Dalton Lowery - Sr., Calvin Allaband-Gamble - Sr. The team will look to continue their success March 16th at the CPL Indoor Championships at The Gately Park Track and Field Center.

Filming Near WY Campus

Power Force Productions, Inc. will be filming scenes for an upcoming television series near the Whitney Young campus later this week.

  • Monday, March 11 (6:00 AM - 6:00 PM): South side of Jackson and the south side of Adams from Ashland to Laflin
  • Tuesday, March 12 4:00 AM - Wednesday, March 13 2:00 AM: Jackson, Adams, Van Buren, and Ashland all affected.
  • Wednesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 14 5:00 AM - 5:00 PM: South side of Jackson and north side of Van Buren.

There are no planned street closures at any time. Please expect production vehicles in the area and give yourself extra time when traveling to and from the Whitney Young campus.

Girls Track Success

The girls track team enjoyed a successful weekend- breaking three indoor school records- as they prepare for the March 16th Indoor City Championship. The weekend began with junior, Angelena Bullocks breaking the record , and running the fastest time in the state, in the 200m dash. This outstanding performance was followed up on Monday , with the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams of: Angelena Bullocks, Ella Sweatt, Mia Seaton, and Kayla Riepe breaking the indoor school records and running the state’s fastest time in both races.

Donation Drive for Chicago Migrants

Whitney Young's Key Club is partnering with the Instituto del Progreso Latino to hold a donation drive in support of Chicago migrants. Please consider donating items listed in our flyer below and ensure they are all brand-new/in packaging. The drive will run from March 11th through April 5th. Donation boxes will be set up in blue house and on the bridge. Thank you.

Student Council/Beyond Books Book Drive

Welcome Visitors from Afar

On Monday, February 12, we hosted 65 students and 15 teachers from our Sister School, Renmin University of China. The RDFZ Dance Troupe gave us a beautiful performance in honor of the Lunar New Year in our theater for the students and teachers. They later also had a memorable and wonderful experience shadowing our students in classes. Principal, Mr. Rickey Harris, and Dr. Karime Asaf, OLCE Chief Officer, welcomed the visitors here together with the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago, Mr. Zhao Jian, and his consular delegation. Special thanks to Mrs. Lusha O’Mara, our world language department chair and Chinese instructor, and assistant principal Matthew Swanson, for organizing this event. An additional thanks to the student helpers, Amber Chen, Ronald Chen, Yuanyuan Chen, Yimeng Gao, JC Garcia, Derrick Jiang, Sarah Kam, Gus Kim, Matthew Lee, Ray Olson, Sunshine Pang, and Chumin Zhou. Healthy Minds Club: Gold Coin Hunt

Healthy Minds Club announces their St. Patrick’s day GOLD COIN HUNT which will take place on Thursday March 14th during school hours. Gold coins will be scattered around the school and can be found in all the main walkways including the bridges and colored houses.
