Congratulations to Katie Sickling and Caidan Curran, the Whitney Young nominees for the HOBY Illinois-North Leadership Seminar. HOBY seminars bring students together from around the state, across different backgrounds, cultures, and communities. Students leave HOBY with the knowledge and passion needed to make a positive impact on the world around them!

ISAC is hosting a virtual FAFSA workshop. This is a great way for parents and/or students to ask any questions and perhaps work 1-1 with an ISAC corps member to complete the FAFSA. The Whitney Young Weekly will not be published on March 24 or March 31. The Weekly will then resume on Sunday, April 7.

Ping Pong Team Wins State

Congrats to the WY ping pong team for taking first place in the recent state tournament! Seniors Chetan Cherukuri & Joshua Liu will be missed next year, but teamates Abel Hsueh, Season He, Jose Ovalle, Paras Cherukuri, Jia Sheng Lin, Mikhail-Acosta & Ethan Lopez are hoping for a repeat Interscholastic Table Tennis of Illinois championship performance next year too. Go Dolphins! 🏓

Innocence Project Bridge Fair

Come to the Arts Bridge on Wednesday, March 20th during any lunch period to learn about the Innocence Project! The Innocence Project is an organization that works to exonerate people that have been wrongfully convicted. Find out what kinds of actions they have taken to free over 200 people so far!

Congratulations to Japan Bowl Teams

We are thrilled to share some exciting news from this past Saturday's Japan Bowl competition. Our dedicated students from Whitney Young showcased their incredible talent and dedication, making us immensely proud. In the Level 3 competition, not just one, but two teams from Whitney Young High School soared to remarkable heights, tying for 2nd place! We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the 24 students who participated in the Japan Bowl competition. Special congratulations are to the medal winners: Maggie La Vallee, Fabian Aceves, Bebel Brown, Lauren Mouse, Tatiana Hines, and Veronica Beyer. This achievement reflects the outstanding teamwork, dedication, and academic excellence that Whitney Young stands for. Go Dolphins!

Spring Greening Clothing Drive

Brighten A Day Club at Whitney Young is partnering with Cradles to Crayons to host a Spring Greening Clothing Drive! Drop off any unwanted clothing items in Blue House, Red House, or the Main Office!

Academic Center Basketball

Congratulations to the Academic Center Boys Basketball team for winning their conference tournament this weekend. They finished their remarkable run by beating the Kenwood Academic Center in the championship! Special acknowledgement to Coach Hill for an outstanding season and to James Toh for earning Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

ASL Day March 22

The Diverse Learners Department is hosting an ASL Day. Come out during your lunch to listen to Deaf speakers, play games, and hang out with the Deaf/HOH at Whitney Young. No ASL Experience Needed!!

Friends of Whitney Young is an incredible organization that provides so much for our WY Community! Thank you FoWY for providing a grant in 2019 to purchase this National Geographic Giant Map. Year after year, students in our Global Citizenship classes enjoy improving geography skills with activies associated with this map!

Honors Economics Shark Tank Project Presentations

During our Supply and Demand Unit, Teacher Reyes and Ms. Mueller’s Honors Economics class created Entrepreneur Projects similar to Shark Tank. On Tuesday, March 12th, students presented their projects to investors Mr. Harris, Ms. Paramore, and Mr. Maksa. Each investor gave feedback, asked questions, and negotiated investment offers to each group/product. A special thanks to Mr. Harris, Ms. Paramore, and Mr. Maksa for taking the time to play the role of investors in the simulation and providing a more authentic learning experience! Students not only learned about real-world economic concepts but also had fun analyzing costs, marginal utility, and market equilibrium!

Introducing Vintage Vault Prom Edition

Do you have any lightly used formalwear in your closet? Want to pass it on to one of our amazing Whitney Young students? Prom is coming up, so please donate your lightly used formalwear — such as dresses, suits, dress shirts, ties, dress shoes, and accessories — to our blue Vintage Vault box located in the WY School Office between now and April 5. IHSA Best of the Day Music Awards

On April 13th, students from Chicago and suburbs competed in the IHSA solo and ensemble contest in Burbank, IL. There were 1,017 entries for this event. Our very own performing arts students received the highest award "Best of the Day". Congratulations to our Band and Choir students; Andy Chilton, Bernard Serrano, Guadalupe Lopez, Jackson Medly, Rachel Yoon, Sofia Bondurant and Angelo Schiciano.

Tryout for Academic Decathlon

All students interested in trying out for next year's Academic Decathlon team, please out this informational form and join our Google classroom (22imvkr). AcaDec is a class and also America's premiere scholastic competition. Students compete across seven subjects (Art, Math, Literature, Economics, Science, Social Science, Music) and three subjective events (Essay, Music, Interview). Our team has been reigning IL state champions for the past 21 years and has consistently ranked among the top five teams in the country. Students from all academic backgrounds GPA levels and grades are welcome to try out. You do not need to be a straight-A student to be on AcaDec. If you love to learn, compete, and make lifelong friends, throw your hat in the ring. Tryouts will be held in May after the national competition.

Check out Student Council's (Prezi) presentation on the timeline of women's rights and powerful women who have impacted our world!

US National Chemistry Olympiad Competition at WY

On March 9th, WY hosted US National Chemistry Olympiad Competition Chicago Section Exam. A record high of 22 Dolphins participated in the competition: Jaden Chan, Natalie Chlebus, Lisari Edirisinghe, Nathan Fournier, Alexa Hernandez, Yinuo Huang, Helen Kuenster, Eric Li, Jason Lin, Michael Marszewski, Kaylen Ng, Lucas Pan, Sabrina Qian, Gabriel Ratner, Victor Sava, Zhouqi Shao, Ethan Sitzes, Thomas Valerius, Lauren Wu, Isabel Xie, Keith Xin, Nicole Yu. Thanks to our volunteers from AAC to help for the event. Shouts out for the year-long hard-work of WY Chemistry Olympiad Team, and exceptional student leaders Lisari Edirisinghe & Keith Xin!

Calling All Artists

Hey, we’re Pride Club! In preparation for this year’s Pride Expo (April 25, mark your calendars!), we are creating a compilation of LGBTQIA+ art from Whitney Young students in the form of a zine. We’re accepting submissions from anyone, but we capped it at two submissions per person. All art submitted is expected to be featured in this zine, but please keep the art school appropriate and related to the LGBTQIA+ community. All forms of art are accepted, including (but not limited to!) videos, stories, poems, and paintings. Please submit any art by Monday, April 8, 2024 and direct all emails to [email protected]. Raise Funds Via Upcoming Spring Bash

Don’t miss out on fundraising directly for your team, club, or organization via the Spring Bash! You can do this one of two ways:

RAFFLE WY teams, clubs, and organizations can sell raffle tickets and bring a significant portion back to your groups. Paper tickets were distributed, but online ticket sales are preferred. Spread the word and have your friends and family buy raffle tickets here. To make sure sales benefit your group, purchasers need to indicate team, club, or organization name and the name of the student selling ticket(s). Sell auction items - ONLINE DONATION FORM DUE Thursday, March 28. All proceeds of auction donations will benefit your group IF this is indicated in the online auction form. If you haven’t already done so, please complete the online donation form here. Donated auction item(s) should be delivered with a copy of online auction donation receipt the week before Spring Break. Get this in as soon as you can.

Breaking Barriers Family Culture Night

Get ready to experience a celebration of diversity at Whitney Young Family Culture Night! Mark your calendars for April 19th! The event will be held in Blue and Red House from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm and will feature a wide variety of cuisines, performances, and games from your very own Whitney Young cultural clubs! This is a potluck event, so we encourage all attendees to bring a dish representing their cultural heritage! We also encourage all attendees to wear their cultural attire! And the best part is that it's FREE! Please fill out the RSVP form if you wish to attend. This is your ticket to Cultural Night! FBI Explorer Program Application

The FBI Chicago Explorers Program is currently accepting applications for the 2024-2025 season; applications are due by April 1st. The program is designed to teach students about the FBI and develop life skills such as active listening, leadership, and adaptability in an engaging and challenging, yet safe curriculum. Students learn about the duties and mission of the FBI through presentations, hands-on activities, and mentorship from FBI Special Agents, Intelligence Analysts, and Professional Staff.
