Who Is Motivated to Do Taxes?

Motivation isn’t what you should do. It's what you actually do. If you find yourself rearranging your sock drawer instead of doing your taxes, it isn't because you are not motivated; it’s because you are more motivated to rearrange your sock drawer. If your intention is to do your taxes, the trick is to change your environment to make doing your taxes easier or more interesting.

You might consider doing it with someone else. Some time ago, I coached a guy who was four years late on his taxes. He bought a keg, had a caterer bring some food, and played music while his friends helped him do his taxes. In the end, he said it was a blast!

"I’m a Recovering Perfectionist – Want to Join Me?"

by Elaine Taylor-Klaus, MCC, CPCC

[Excerpt]

So, I'm a recovering perfectionist.

Every day I make the effort to redefine success in terms that make sense for my family, and myself.

  •  I remind my husband that a 90 is still an A when he judges his own performance too harshly.
  • I encourage my dyslexic daughter to be thrilled with a B on a Lit paper.
  • And I own my mistakes vocally and forgive myself…a lot.

That's what I call success!

If you can relate to this scenario, please read the full article by Elaine Taylor-Klaus, Master Certified Coach, for insight on managing the challenges of parenting complex children based on the theory that failure is as excellent a teacher as success: "I'm a Recovering Perfectionist -- Want to Join Me?"
