NEW IBERIA, La. --- September 8, 1935, is a date many remember as the day former Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey Long was shot. In actuality, only one man died that day — Dr. Carl A. Weiss. He has been persecuted throughout the ensuing years for shooting Long. “Accident and Deception” is a 15-minute documentary based on a book by Dr. Donald A. Pavy, a country doctor with a lifelong quest to recapture that day and clear the family name. Legal justice may never be served, but, eyewitness stories reveal details that cannot be ignored.
This project was inspired by conversations between Dr. Donald Pavy and Vicky Branton, a writer intent on telling the doctor’s story about a practice that spanned 64 years before retirement. What he told her instead has fascinated thousands without achieving the goal he hoped would come from his passion — family honor.
The short documentary “Accident and Deception” will premiere at the Iberia Film Festival's opening reception on Aug. 1, at the Sliman Theater (129 E. Main St.) in New Iberia. Next door is the Bayou Teche Museum. The short will become a permanent public display in the new political exhibit to be installed following current renovations.
The documentary is being produced in partnership with Education Value Entertainment Inc., founded in 2001 by Vicky Branton, and Ardent Flame Media Group under the direction of Carrie Davis Simon and Mark Davis.
How to Donate:
Donations are now being accepted to help with production of this documentary and to further the cause of exposing the daunting death of Weiss, an assassination of an unarmed man.
