♪♫ WHO RUNS THE WORLD?♪♫
The program is designed to promote women's civic engagement and to diversify the ballot, with the long-term goal of increasing women's representation in elected leadership. Other presenters included Senator Audrey Gibson, District Representative Amber Mariano, Leon County Clerk of Court Gwen Marshall, Commissioner Betsy Barfield, former Florida Secretary of State Sandra Mortham, and former Tallahassee Mayor Dorothy Inman-Johnson.
O'Keefe and Smitha collaborated with well-known political strategist Brice Barnes to conduct a two-hour course for participants who are "Ready to Run" focusing on the strategic and legal considerations of running for office in Florida. Topics included:
- Assessing and establishing oneself as a candidate
- Launching a campaign
- Navigating qualifying requirements and documents, including residency issues and common pitfalls
- Pros and cons of qualifying by fee versus by petition
- Developing a campaign plan and organization
- The nitty-gritty of contributions and expenditures, including petty cash do's and don'ts
- Strategies for, and regulations governing, political advertising
- The Hatch Act
- Campaign cyber security
- Common campaign mistakes to avoid.
Missed the Tallahassee program? Not to worry because this course can be tailored for individuals, campaigns for any office, or large groups anywhere in Florida.

We recently wrote about the hazards of
Florida's residency requirements, including the legal challenge to Paul Chandler's residency in the Florida HD 44 special election. Chandler has since withdrawn. As of this writing, a replacement candidate has not been publicly announced by the Democrats. Because ballots have already been printed with Chandler's name, voters will be informed that a vote for Chandler will count as a vote for Chandler's replacement should one be named and qualified in time.
