Good afternoon  ,

"Who am I?"

Some people have no doubt about the answer to this question. Others might struggle to answer it definitively.

Lee Ellis, with whom I connected on LinkedIn some time ago, explores the concept of "core identity" in his Leading with Honor Discovery Report.

The point Lee makes in this discussions is that each of us has several layers of identity. A "surface" layer is what we do and have done. In Lee's case he spent many years as an Air Force pilot.

He's associated with various groups related to his Air Force career, college connections, etc. Those associations are another level of identity.

During his military career he was shot down and taken prisoner of war. During his time of captivity, he had lots of time to think about core values.

When one is physically restrained for a long period of time, "Who am I?" becomes a very important question, and the answers must go far deeper than "What I do" or "Whom I'm associated with". You're probably not "doing" anything or "associating with" anyone.  Who are you then?!

Core Identity means:
  • What do I believe?
  • What are my values?
  • What is my purpose?
  • What is constant for me, whether I'm flying a plane, sitting in a prison cell, or socializing with my friends?
Very important questions to ponder and know...or discover...the answers to!

For those more inclined to listen than read he discusses this in a  six-minute video here .

Enjoy reading and/or listening ! If you like what Lee has to say, he invites you to subscribe to his material on the linked pages, or you can do so directly here. A couple of months ago, I focused on Lee's eulogy of a revered Air Force leader and colleague in this edition of The Unity Community.

Who are you?

Care to talk about your exploration of this question? For some this might be a suitable subject for a multi-session coaching program - beyond the scope of what you and I might talk about, but I might be able to steer you to someone you could work with. And of course I'll do so with total confidentiality.

Your comments on The Unity Community and its contents are always welcome. Please tell me what you like and how you think I might improve it.

Would you like to suggest a topic for a future issue, perhaps  including something you write?

About John

Throughout a career spanning over 45 years my management style has been one of building teams to bring several competent people together to focus on a common objective. I noted early in my career that, in most organizations, there is an enormous amount of time, energy, and effort wasted by people working at cross purposes.

As I transition to life in the Argentine outback, my focus shifts from coaching to helping other business coaches and advisers get their message out to their prospective clients. With my first-hand knowledge of the benefits of effective business coaching, I am uniquely qualified to work with business advisers of all stripes convey their message.
