Strive to Thrive

I Am an Artist:

Presenting Work

Presenting your work isn't only about what you make. It's about access, invitation, and who holds the power to decide. This continuum traces a shift: from waiting for a door to open, to being sought out, to choosing which rooms are worth entering, and eventually holding the door for others.

As you read, notice where you land and what rises in you when you land there. Most artists sit in more than one place at once, depending on the venue or the piece. The useful question isn't "How far am I from Thrive?" It's "What is keeping me where I am, and what's one move that's actually within reach?"

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

KRISTINA SALINAS

San Antonio, Texas

Tell us about yourself.

In my work, I open my eyes to signals to culture. I live and work in South Texas, with my sights toward the Texas frontera, reaching into my ancestral home in Northern Mexico. I am a representational figurative painter, printmaker and builder of site-specific installation pieces. My body of work is designed to strike a familiarity in the viewer, and by doing so, increasing connectivity throughout my community.

I thrive when I...

witness the spark of recognition in others when viewing my work. It is endlessly meaningful to me to represent my Mexican-American community on the sacred space of the gallery wall.

SELF-CARE CORNER

Watch: Success, failure and the drive to keep creating

Elizabeth Gilbert was once an "unpublished diner waitress," devastated by rejection letters. And yet, in the wake of the success of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' she found herself identifying strongly with her former self. With beautiful insight, Gilbert reflects on why success can be as disorienting as failure and offers a simple -- though hard -- way to carry on, regardless of outcomes.
