From Rabbi Brodkin
Dear Friends,
This past week, I had the opportunity to travel to NY for the wedding of Sammy & Kayla Aronson. This was a wonderful Simcha. A number of us Portlanders were there, and there was such a
Ruach
of joy in the air. Amazingly, as many of you know, this past week was also the wedding of Sam & Leora Glauber (unfortunately, I was unable to be in the Holy Land for that one!) Both of the two “Sams” are wonderful young men who grew up in our Kehila. Sammy Aronson’s Bar Mitzvah was the first Simcha I participated in at Kesser Israel back in 2006, and Sam Glaubers’s took place shortly after that same year. It is a milestone to see both of them begin to establish their homes in Israel (and of course, Mazel Tov to both of their families!).
Reflecting on these two events, it occurs to me just how unique the Jewish people are. I recall the first Frum wedding I ever attended. At the age of 19, I was learning for a summer in a yeshiva where Rabbi Chaim Brovender was Rosh Yeshiva. At that time, Rabbi Brovender’s son got married in Jerusalem and the entire Yeshiva was invited to the event. From the Chuppah to the dancing, I was blown away by the experience – I had never seen anything like it.
Why is it that the Jewish wedding is so unique? I am sure that there are a number of answers to that question. I believe that one reason is that the Jewish wedding expresses an intense combination of two very different ideas or emotions: holiness and sanctity on the one hand, and joy and celebration on the other. The moments under the Chupah in which a man betroths his wife –
K’Das Moshe V’Yisrael
- as well as the recollection of
Yerushalayim
, speak to a deep holiness that can only be found in the Jewish people. On the other hand, there is an elation and celebration at the Jewish wedding and
Sheva Brachos
which seem unparalleled.
These two aspects of the Jewish wedding speak to the duality of the Jewish home. The
Jewish wedding
is holy and joyful because the
Jewish home
is holy and joyful. In our times, the society we live in struggles to maintain a semblance of the foundational institutions upon which human society is built: marriage, family, and the home. In that light, the Jewish people serve as a great example and a powerful counter culture that all people should learn from. The beauty of our wedding celebrations is merely a reflection of the beauty of the Jewish home, which itself is a testament to the richness and the power of our Torah.
As we declare in Shabbat Mincha
- Mi K’Amcha Yisrael –
who can be likened to Your people Israel!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Ken Brodkin
