Who's In Charge? Understanding Chimpanzee Group Dynamics

Chimpanzee groups have complex social structures, with each individual holding a place within the hierarchy. While people often picture a dominant male at the top, chimpanzee relationships are shaped by personality, friendships, family bonds, and alliances—and every group is a little different.

Jeeter’s group is a wonderful example. All five chimpanzees came from entertainment, the private pet trade, or roadside attractions. Because they did not grow up in a typical chimpanzee social group, their hierarchy works a bit differently.

In this group, the females—Maggie, Bella, and Ellie—are the most dominant, with Maggie generally considered the alpha. Jeeter and Larry often choose to back away when the ladies make their wishes known!

Larry and Bella are good friends, but family and female alliances run deep. When disagreements arise, Bella will usually support Maggie, her sister, and Ellie before siding with Larry. Most of the time, the group gets along very well. Still, with five strong personalities living together, an occasional noisy skirmish is perfectly normal.

These disagreements are part of chimpanzee communication—and once everyone has made their point, life usually settles back into its familiar rhythm.

Twice a year, our adoptive parents get a little something special in their inboxes: a personalized update about their adopted ape.

Ape Updates are one of the ways we help our 600+ adoptive parents stay connected to the orangutans and chimpanzees they support. And with 70 residents, putting them together truly takes a village!

It starts with our caregivers, who know the apes best. They share recent observations, favorite enrichment activities, social interactions, new accomplishments, and other moments from daily life at the sanctuary. They also help capture new photos of each resident to accompany their update.

From there, our Donor Programs Coordinator gathers everything, writes and formats 70 unique updates, pairs them with recent photos, and prepares them to be sent to more than 600 adoptive parents.

It's a process that takes time, but hearing from our adoptive parents afterward makes every bit of it worthwhile. We love hearing how much they look forward to learning what's new with their ape, how the updates help them feel connected between visits or from hundreds of miles away, and how being an adoptive parent makes them feel like a meaningful part of the sanctuary community.

Right now, Ape Updates are going out! If you're an adoptive parent, keep an eye on your inbox over the next few days, and please check your spam or junk folder, too, as we've experienced a few technical hiccups with this round of emails.

Want an Ape Update of Your Own?

Become an adoptive parent now, and you'll receive your first Ape Update as part of this current round. Along with periodic updates, your symbolic adoption helps support the daily care of the orangutan or chimpanzee you choose and gives you another way to stay connected to their life here at the sanctuary.

Who Will Care for Them in the Years Ahead?

When you think about the future, you may picture the people and places that have mattered most throughout your life. For many friends of the Center for Great Apes, that picture also includes the orangutans and chimpanzees they have come to know and love.

Sinbad and Connie are among our senior orangutans. They share their days together, enjoying the comfort and familiarity of a trusted companion. As they grow older, their needs may change, but the importance of that bond remains.

Providing lifelong sanctuary means being prepared to care for Sinbad, Connie, and every resident through all the seasons of their lives. It means adapting habitats, providing specialized veterinary care, and respecting the relationships that help them feel safe and secure.

During National Make-a-Will Month, we invite you to consider a simple question: Could your compassion for the great apes become part of the legacy you leave behind?

A gift to the Center for Great Apes through your will or estate plan can help ensure that our residents continue receiving exceptional care while remaining surrounded by the companions they know and trust. Gifts of every size can make a lasting difference.

If the Center is already included in your plans, we would be grateful if you would let us know. We would be honored to welcome you into our Legacy Society and thank you for making the future of the great apes part of your own lasting legacy.

Your plans today can help ensure they always have sanctuary—and one another—tomorrow.
