Who’s Watching Boaters?

Boaters Are Voters!

Friday, May 12, 2023

Ahoy Boater,

We hope this message finds you well and enjoying the start of the boating season. As the weather warms up and the waters beckon, we want to bring an essential matter to your attention. Are you curious who’s on the other end of those surveillance cameras on the new gate entrances to the new boat docks? We have some exciting news to share with you.

According to a staff person in the management office, the cameras are for security reasons, and upper management is on the other end of those cameras. Why would management want to watch boaters entering parking lots and entrances to the boat dock slips? Is it better to utilize a bonded security company with procedures to act upon an unlawful intrusion? And if not, why would management want to watch? As a boater, do you feel safer as a result? What possible reason would any boater pay for surveillance conducted by DPHP? It’s important to ask these questions, especially since boaters are paying for fewer amenities and experiencing another not-so-hidden increase in electricity and water for the new slips.

By the way, have you heard the term big brother before? It comes from the novel 1984 by George Orwell, published in 1949. In the novel, Big Brother is the leader of a totalitarian government known as the Party, which exercises control over the lives of the citizens through constant surveillance, propaganda, and manipulation. The term “Big Brother” is often used today to refer to any entity, whether government or corporate, that exercises excessive control or surveillance over individuals.
