THEODATE POPE
SELF-TAUGHT ARCHITECT
The Hill-Stead is a Connecticut gem and one of my all-time favorite day trips! Located in Farmington, this lovely country home was the first architectural project of an Ohio industrialist's unconventional and headstrong daughter who convinced her dad that she, rather than the highly-distinguished firm of McKim, Mead and White, should design their family's summer home. The result? The classically stunning, beautifully proportioned, well-appointed Hill-Stead. And what awaits inside is one of the most amazing private art collections in the world!!

THEODATE POPE
LUSITANIA SURVIVOR

In addition to being one of the first American women architects, Theodate had been a passenger on the ill-fated Lusitania. When her lifeless body was recovered from the ocean, she was presumed dead and laid alongside the corpses. Click below to find out more about this feisty, resilient woman who not only lived, but went on to design some of the most charming landmarks in New England!
