One of the dirtiest lies ever believed is the notion that eating fat leads to heart disease, elevated cholesterol and weight gain.
Back in the 90s I bought in to the idea that eating fat was a problem when really, it was sugar.
Here’s what the food companies aren’t telling you about all these low-fat products (which includes everything from yogurt to granola bars to condiments):
When you take the fat out of food, it doesn't taste good.
So to make the food taste good, sugar is added to replace fat!
The marketing companies are betting on people correlating “low-fat” with “healthy” but this is an old world view.
Fat-free yogurt has more sugar than a candy bar.
If you don't believe me, it's time to start reading your labels.
Whether you've participated in my Sugar Detox program, are on a low-glycemic Paleo or anti-inflammatory plan or have gone full keto - you already know about my live event: Keto Symposium.
It's really for anyone who wants to live a sugar-free lifestyle and needs more inspiration, education and tools.
It's not just a nutrition conference, it's also an expo.
One of the vendors at the Keto Symposium is Guy Gone Keto – founded by Thom King.
Thom struggled with his weight for most of his life until he found the ketogenic diet and the rest is history.
But Thom fancies himself as a “foodie.” And what self-respecting foodie doesn’t use spices and condiments?
That was until he checked out the nutritional info on ketchup…
...and realized it contained more sugar than ice cream!
Yikes.
Imagine placing a scoop of ice cream on your burger.
Yuck!
And it’s not just ketchup that’s loaded with sugar.
Here are a few other popular condiments you might not have realized have so much sugar:
* Sriracha
1 teaspoon contains 1 gram, but most normal people will eat far more than one teaspoon of sriracha.
* BBQ sauce
1 tablespoon contains 6 grams of sugar. And again, it’ll take more than 1 tablespoon to cover your ribs.
* Mayonnaise
Mayo tries to pretend it doesn’t contain any sugar. But it does – just read the ingredients (it's disguised as high-fructose corn syrup, molasses, cane syrup or dextrose).
That’s because according to food label laws, you can advertise something as having no sugar if it’s under 0.5 grams. But if you have more than the suggested serving size (which again, most normal humans have more than the suggested serving size) then you are eating sugar!
*
Honey mustard
1 tablespoon contains 3 grams of sugar and again, you’re probably going to eat more than 1 tablespoon.
*
Teriyaki sauce
1 tablespoon contains 7 grams of sugar, and yes, you’ll probably eat more than 1 tablespoon.
And there are plenty of other condiments that contain a ton of sugar.
Well, Thom liked his condiments and didn’t want to have to give them up. So he started making his own ...and they were so delicious he decided he should sell them.
Fast forward to today and Guy Gone Keto offers keto-friendly ketchup, BBQ sauce, steak sauce, teriyaki sauce, MCT oil, Thai chili sauce, and even a keto-friendly sweetener.
Who said keto had to be so boring and flavorless?
Anyways, Guy Gone Keto is bringing a sampler of everything they make to Keto Symposium – so attending is your chance to try it!
There will be plenty of other awesome keto-friendly vendors there as well as some of the top experts in the ketogenic space. Not to mention, you get to hang out with other keto-fanatics for probably the first time in your life :)
Keto Symposium isn’t until Saturday May 2nd, but you can save $30 on the price of admission if you buy your tickets before December 1st.
