Happy Friday!
I have never met someone who wishes they sold their residential property 15 years ago. On the other hand, I have met many people that regret selling or not holding on to a property years later.
I believe that people work hard and they want something to show for it, not just now but possibly for generations to come. That's why it always pains me when I see a group of siblings or family members decide to sell the family home.
That might sound counterintuitive because of my profession, but hear me out. Let's say you sell a $1M home (that mom and dad probably paid $80k for) and split it 4 ways. Now, say everyone nets $200k; for many people that's a few good vacations and maybe a couple of vehicles and then *POOF* it's gone. That's a recipe to squander all of mom and dad's hard work.
Rent and property values rise with inflation and will only go up with time. Wouldn't you rather have an ever-increasing check every month for the rest of your life (as long as it's occupied) instead of one big check that most will blow unless they are very disciplined financially? Financial experts suggest you'll need anywhere from $1.5M to $2.5M per person to retire comfortably, and the truth is most people don't have that kind of money lying around. So you'll be glad you held onto every income stream you could.
I still want to do business with you, but more importantly I want you to look out for your future self. And just because someone isn't selling doesn't mean I can't help them. That's why I founded my property management firm Legacy Real Estate Asset Management because I am so focused on helping people maintain and grow what they've worked so hard for.
Fortunately, there are ways that you can ensure your heirs can continue to benefit from your hard work well into the future. Through vehicles such as Trusts and LLCs, you can ensure that your family can feel your blessing well after you're gone. Now this is where we cross over into legal advice and I am not an attorney, so if you are interested in beginning to talk about estate planning or want to go more into detail on this I can recommend a great firm that will help you get everything in order.
Your hard work deserves to outlast you. Let's make sure it does.
Thank you,
Johnny
