Why Some Hazardous Materials Have No

Packing Group Assignment

Packing groups are one of the most important, yet frequently misunderstood, elements of dangerous goods transportation. Many hazmat employees learn to identify hazard classes, labels, and UN identification numbers early in their training, but packing groups introduce an additional layer of regulatory complexity that directly affects packaging selection, quantity limitations, and transportation safety. What creates even more confusion is that not every hazardous material is assigned a packing group at all. That detail often surprises employees who assume every dangerous good automatically falls into Packing Group I, II, or III.

Do 49 CFR and IMDG Have a Prescribed Form for Shipping Hazmat?

If you have spent any time preparing hazardous materials shipments, you have probably asked a deceptively simple question. Do regulations like 49 CFR and the IMDG Code actually require a specific form, or is it more about the information itself? The answer is where things get interesting. Neither framework mandates a single universal template in the way many shippers expect, yet both are extremely strict about the content, sequence, and accuracy of the information that must appear on shipping papers. That distinction creates confusion in day to day operations and is exactly where compliance risks tend to surface.
