Why Immigration Matters to Architecture

You may ask: Why is AIA|LA organizing a summit on immigration? Isn’t this a political issue, far outside the bounds of design? We see it differently. Immigration isn’t just a human story—it’s an economic and creative one that directly shapes the built environment.

Los Angeles thrives on diversity: 1 in 3 Angelenos is an immigrant, speaking more than 224 languages. Without immigrant labor, construction alone would face a nearly 16% GDP contraction. Immigrant entrepreneurs own nearly 11% of California’s small businesses. These are the scaffolding of our city’s future. And in design, immigrant voices–whether students, skilled workers, or entrepreneurs–expand creativity, sharpen our decisions, and ensure projects resonate with cultural context.

The summit will feature two essential panels:

  • The Value of International Students in Higher Education – spotlighting how students, over half in STEM fields, drive innovation and competitiveness.
  • Immigration, Skilled Labor, and Creative Outcomes in AEC – examining how a workforce shaped by courage and resilience elevates creative outcomes, strengthens resilience, and secures our prosperity.

We’ll also move beyond dehumanizing terminology to recognize the profound contributions of every individual.

This is why we must convene these conversations-not to wade into politics, but to face the realities shaping our industry and city.

Join us, support us, and ensure that AIA|LA continues to create space for the tough but necessary dialogues that lead to a more equitable, innovative Los Angeles.
