Why Standing Can Trigger Symptoms in Dysautonomia

It’s one of the most basic things we do: stand up. Most people don’t give it a second thought. But if you’re living with Dysautonomia, that simple act can feel like a total system failure.

If you’ve ever wondered why your heart starts racing, your head feels light, or your vision goes spotty the moment you get upright, it isn’t just a random fluke. It’s a sign that the communication lines between your brain and your body are experiencing a "timing" issue.

The Gravity Challenge

When you stand, gravity pulls about 20% of your blood volume toward your feet. In a typical system, the brainstem receives this data and instantly coordinates a reflex to constrict blood vessels and stabilize heart rate.

Think of your brain as the "air traffic controller" for your circulation. In Dysautonomia, the controller isn't receiving the radar signals quite fast enough.

The brain doesn't effectively process the data that tells it you've changed position, leading to a delayed or exaggerated response that leaves you feeling symptomatic.

Mapping the Symptoms to the Brain

Because the brain isn't efficiently managing this shift, it struggles to maintain balance, resulting in familiar triggers:

Tachycardia (Racing Heart):

This is your brain’s "emergency" backup plan. If the signal to constrict blood vessels is weak, the brain signals the heart to beat faster to ensure your head gets the oxygen it needs.

Dizziness & "Brain Fog":

When blood flow to the brain drops—even for a few seconds—processing speed slows down. This is essentially a temporary "low power mode" for your neurons while they wait for more fuel.

The "Coat Hanger" Pain:

That dull ache in your neck and shoulders is often a result of the brain struggling to route enough oxygenated blood to the muscles that support your posture.

Recalibrating the System

The good news is that these pathways aren't necessarily broken—they are often just poorly calibrated.

Our approach focuses on giving the brain the specific, targeted input it needs to "relearn" how to manage gravity.

By using targeted exercises that involve the inner ear and sensory systems, we can help the brain build a more accurate map of your body’s position in space.

The goal is to move your nervous system out of a reactive "panic" state and back into a state of efficient, automatic control.

A Neural Reset Strategy

If you struggle with the transition from sitting to standing, you can help "prime" your system:

Lower Limb Activation:

Before standing, pump your ankles and squeeze your glutes for 15 seconds. This provides an immediate burst of data to the brain and manually assists blood flow.

The Pause:

Sit on the edge of your chair for a full minute. This gives your internal sensors a "buffer" to adjust their firing rates before you fully challenge them with gravity.

Isometric Tensing:

If symptoms hit while standing, crossing your legs and tensing your core can help provide the mechanical "squeeze" that your brain is currently struggling to automate.

We are dedicated to helping you fine-tune these internal connections so that standing up doesn't have to be a trigger.
