Cultivating the Torch of Hope in Dark Times
What is hope? I see it as one of the gifts of being human. It’s looking over a parapet that’s under assault and seeing a glimmer of light. Then deciding to focus on it.
It’s seeing possibility when it’s not visible and the refusal to let go of our life purpose in the face of adversity.
Hope can inspire change and action. It can mean we go on regardless fuelled by what matters to us. Musician and writer Nick Cave once said “Hope is optimism with a broken heart” which is beautiful and poignant in its simplicity.
Hope for me is action and courage despite the despair, the ability to see the potential for beauty and magic in the mundane and the refusal to give in to lethargy, powerlessness and despair.
Hopeful people create light and attraction. We are moths to hope.
How to Harvest Your Hope
Get a pen and paper and answer the following:
- What in life is important to you?
- The values you stand by are … ?
- What gives you purpose?
- Write down 5 blessings or things you are grateful for each day
- Who or what do you appreciate in your life?
- What does your heart want you to do?
- What can you stop complaining about?
- Who or what do you need to accept in life and stop resisting?
- Where in your day is there hope?
- Where in the year ahead can you look forward and create it?
Hope is an energy of positive possibility and it has life and wonder. If you do nothing else in 2025 develop hope and invest in it with everything you’ve got.
