Why Would a Prostitute Kiss Jesus’ Feet?
In Luke 7:36-50, we see a woman who is a prostitute kiss the feet of Jesus. She never attempted to kiss the feet of the Pharisees. In fact, the Pharisees were offended that Jesus would allow such a sinner to even touch Him.
What Jesus knew that the Pharisees didn’t is why this woman who was spurned and rejected by them would come to Jesus and show Him such love and gratefulness.
Here is the real reason a prostitute kissed the feet of Jesus.
“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7).
The Pharisees had no message of good news. They could not proclaim the peace that passes all understanding. Because of their warped view of God, they would never tell people God had good things for them. They couldn’t proclaim salvation and declare their God reigns because their message was all about what they could do for God and not what God did for them.
Jesus was kissed on the feet by a prostitute because she saw in Him hope out of her hopelessness. Jesus, unlike the Pharisees, accepted her as she came to Him. He knew that His life in her would transform her from who she was to who He saw her as in Him. The gospel isn’t about your past sins and failures; it is allowing God to reign in you with His life and peace, which will bring all the good things He has for you into your life. When you see Jesus as this prostitute did, you will also want to fall down and kiss His feet.
