Why Written Goals Matter

How many of you have goals? More importantly: how many are written down?

You can't hit a target you can't see.

Studies suggest only about 3% of people write their goals yearly—and many joke that the other 97% end up working for those who do.

There’s power in making goals visible. Research indicates that writing goals by hand can increase your likelihood of achieving them by roughly 40%. Handwritten goals create clarity, commitment, and a physical reminder you can return to. I learned this firsthand at Jack Canfield’s Breakthrough to Success week in 2015. One of the biggest takeaways was the value of vision boards: tangible, visible collections of what you want to create. Placed on a mirror, in a closet, or on the dashboard, they keep your priorities top of mind and train your attention toward the future you’re building.

Make your goals practical. Break them into categories—financial, personal, professional, recreational, spiritual—so you’re addressing all parts of life. Assign timelines: what will you accomplish in one year, three years, five years, ten years, and what belongs on your bucket list? Time-framing turns vague wishes into actionable plans.

Consider the example of Lou Holtz, who once wrote down more than a hundred lifetime goals. He reportedly completed nearly all of them. That level of achievement didn’t come from luck; it came from clarity, repetition, and consistent focus. When goals are written, reviewed, and prioritized, they move from abstract desires into daily habits and decisions.

Practical steps to get started:

  • Write down 10–15 goals by hand today.
  • Categorize them and attach realistic timelines.
  • Create a vision board or place key goals where you’ll see them daily.
  • Review and revise monthly—celebrate progress and adjust as needed.

If you want to go somewhere in life, first know where you’re aiming. Make your targets visible, write them down, and revisit them often. Small, consistent actions guided by clear goals won’t just increase your odds—they’ll change the trajectory of your life.

I had the opportunity to meet Angela Duckworth in Las Vegas in 2023 at the Parker Chiropractic Seminar where I had the good fortune to watch her speak as well.

The daughter of a scientist who frequently noted her lack of “genius,” Angela Duckworth is now a celebrated researcher and professor. It was her early eye-opening stints in teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience that led to her hypothesis about what really drives success: not genius, but a unique combination of passion and long-term perseverance.

In Grit, she takes us into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, teachers working in some of the toughest schools, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll. The podcast, What It Takes To Build A Championship Team, argues that championship teams are not built by collecting the most talented people. They are built by creating an environment where people trust one another, commit to shared values, confront fear, and consistently choose behaviors that strengthen the team.

When culture, connection, and disciplined habits align, exceptional performance becomes much more sustainable. Listen to the complete podcast here!
