Why do grocery stores make you feel dizzy?

For some people, grocery shopping is a quick, routine errand. But for others, walking into a busy store can bring on a surprising combination of dizziness, nausea, unsteadiness, or even a feeling of being overwhelmed.

Think about everything happening around you. Bright lights, crowded aisles, shelves filled with visual information, people moving in different directions, shopping carts crossing your path, overhead announcements, and the constant need to navigate your surroundings.

Your brain is taking in and processing all of that information at once.

For someone whose visual, vestibular, or sensory systems aren't working as efficiently as they should, that amount of stimulation can become difficult to manage.

Your Eyes and Inner Ear Have to Work Together

Your brain relies on information from your eyes, inner ears, muscles, and joints to understand where your body is in space. Your eyes are constantly telling your brain what you're seeing, while your vestibular system helps detect movement and changes in position. Your brain then has to combine all of those signals to help you stay balanced and oriented.

When those systems aren't communicating efficiently, visually busy environments can make symptoms much more noticeable. That's why you might feel relatively fine sitting at home, but within minutes of entering a grocery store, suddenly feel dizzy or unsteady.

And if you've started avoiding certain stores because you already know how you'll feel afterward, that experience is worth paying attention to. It doesn't necessarily mean you're simply anxious or that you're imagining your symptoms.

Sometimes, everyday environments can reveal challenges with how the brain is processing and integrating sensory information.

At Plasticity Brain Centers, the focus is on understanding what may be contributing to those symptoms and how the brain's visual, balance, and sensory systems are working together.

If grocery stores leave you feeling dizzy or overwhelmed, there may be more happening than you realize.
