An Evening of Gratitude | June 3, 2013

A word from the Rabbi
Rabbi Paltiel Greetings!

Ever wonder - why did G-d design it that we need to spend almost a third of our lifetime sleeping? What a waste of precious time from our preciously short journey here on earth!

The Rebbe once explained: If we didn't sleep, there would be no tomorrow. Life would be a single, seamless today. Our every thought and deed would be an outgrowth of all our previous thoughts and deeds. There would be no new beginnings in our lives. Sleep offers us the opportunity to say goodbye to today and to open a new chapter in life that is neither predicted nor enabled by what we did and who we were up until now. To free ourselves of yesterday's constraints and build a new, recreated self.

After Hurricane Sandy severely damaged our Chabad House, we spent the past six months regrouping, rebuilding, putting the pieces back together again. With Hashem's blessing and the help of so many generous friends in the local community, Jews and non-Jews, our center is more beautiful than ever.

The experience was trying. It felt like a setback and a waste of precious time and resources. In hindsight (and in truth...) it was an opportunity for a new beginning, a fresh start. We're invigorated and refreshed to do even more to serve the community in any way we can.

Join us on June 2nd for our Twenty Second Anniversary Dinner - "An Evening of Gratitude" - honoring the Port Washington community for the extraordinary spirit of community and generosity extended to us during our time of need.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Shalom M. Paltiel

Question of the Week
Question of the week
Will Kabbalah Drive You Mad?
By: Rabbi Aron Moss | Sydney, Australia

Question: I grew up hearing that to learn Kabbalah you have to be married, over forty, and an accomplished scholar. Otherwise you will go mad. Yet these days it seems everyone and anyone studies Kabbalah. So is what I heard not true or have the rules changed? Or have we all gone mad?

Daily Thought
The New Self-Sacrifice

The last written work of the Rebbe before his stroke centered on the following thought. The Rebbe personally handed a copy to thousands of people. I believe it is a summary of who we are and what we must do:

Self-sacrifice in a land of freedom penetrates to the bone.

I saw men and women who sacrificed all they had to defy the religious persecution of the Bolshevik regime. They came to a land of freedom and comfort-where is their greatness now?

Then there is the child of that land of freedom and comfort, worshipping it, chasing after it-but inside he is crushed by the spiritual void. His inner being does not let him alone, the spark inside that cries, "This is not what really want! I don't want this world! I don't want any worlds! All I want is Him alone!"

This is the crushing of an olive for its oil. The oil spreads and penetrates every fiber of his being. His every faculty begins to burn. And there shines the source of light that can never be extinguished nor dimmed.

It is the light from which a new age is formed.

The Chronological Imagination
The Torah did not abolish slavery, but it set in motion a process that would lead people to come of their own accord to the conclusion that it was wrong. How it did so is one of the wonders of history.

The Parshah In A Nutshell
Parshat Behar-Bechukotai
On the mountain of Sinai, G-d communicates to Moses the laws of the Sabbatical year: every seventh year, all work on the land should cease, and its produce becomes free for the taking for all, man and beast.

Seven Sabbatical cycles are followed by a fiftieth year-the Jubilee year, on which work on the land ceases, all indentured servants are set free, and all ancestral estates in the Holy Land that have been sold revert to their original owners. Additional laws governing the sale of lands, and the prohibitions against fraud and usury, are also given.

G-d promises that if the people of Israel will keep His commandments, they will enjoy material prosperity and dwell secure in their homeland. But He also delivers a harsh " rebuke," warning of the exile, persecution and other evils that will befall them if they abandon their covenant with Him. Nevertheless, "Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away; nor will I ever abhor them, to destroy them and to break My covenant with them; for I am the L-rd their G-d."

The Parshah concludes with the rules on how to calculate the values of different types of pledges made to G-d.
