Families who homeschool with Classical Conversations® belong to a small community of local parents and students all walking the same path together.
Lisa Bailey, a veteran homeschool mom and host of the Classical Conversations podcast Everyday Educator, wrote an article several years ago in which she narrowed down what makes a community-based approach to homeschooling special. Here are several of her thoughts!
Community Is About Fellowship
When Lisa was a young homeschool mom, she sought community as an opportunity for fellowship. Although she enjoyed learning at home with her two girls, their family needed others with whom to learn together and do life together!
Community Is About Encouragement
When Lisa’s family first joined a local homeschool community, they received encouragement and help from new friends. For example, Lisa had many questions about homeschooling and parenting that those more experienced in the group were able to answer.
Community Is About Service
Lisa and her girls also discovered opportunities for service in their local community. Whether supporting another parent or student, they were able to help others succeed on their homeschooling journeys.
Community Is About Accountability
Before homeschooling in a community, Lisa struggled to hold herself accountable. But after joining her Classical Conversations community, other parents helped her stay on track by adding a little positive peer pressure into the mix!
Community Is About Others
Within their small community, Lisa’s girls benefited greatly from having others to socialize with, speak to, debate with, and love on. Plus, they learned from other parents (and not just Lisa) who spoke God’s truth into their lives.
Community Is About Becoming
In joining her community, Lisa realized that walking alongside others has the power to show us what God intends us to become. In other words, the power of community lies in conversation because conversations lead us to ask questions, examine our beliefs, and update them in light of God’s Word. Together, we can understand more than we can apart!
