Do You Know Your 'WHY'?

January! The month most known for goal setting and resolutions to do things better and different in your life.

It's wonderful and full of promise and new beginnings but for many there is no follow through, no real reason to make the changes they were so passionate about on New Year Eve. 
Good news, knowing your own personal WHY is going to be your key to success!

Why Your WHY is Important!

It's hard to make improvements in your life if you don't know why you want them. 

You will have a much greater chance of success when you know why you want to achieve the things you want to achieve.  

It's often not enough to just say "I want to quit smoking" or "I want to lose weight" or "I want to clean out the garage"

While wanting something is a start, it's still not the true motivation and that's why your WHY is important.
There are goals and actions and motivations to all we want to achieve but until the WHY is at the forefront of our mind it will be much harder to stay on task, plan, action, etc.

Your WHY will always be the motivation that drives you to attain your goals.
Steps You Can Use to Find Your WHY.

Let's start with a pretty common goal that most everyone can relate to.  You can insert your own goal and use the same progression.
"I want to lose weight."
  • First ask yourself why you do you want to lose weight; is it because of your health, so your clothes fit better, so you feel more confident, etc.?
  • OK, next ask yourself why do you want to feel more confident, etc.; is it so you can feel the confidence to start a new career?
  • Next, ask yourself why do you want to have a new career, etc.; is it so you can travel or maybe earn a living doing something you passionately love to do.
  • Now ask yourself why do you want to do something that you feel passionately about, etc.; is it so you feel a sense of fulfillment and purpose?
  • Then ask yourself how will your life be different by living a life of fulfillment and purpose?  The answer is in you and you will have to dig deep to find it.

The more you drill down into your WHY the more clear you are on all you want to achieve. Ask yourself why for each answer you give until you feel satisfied you've reached the ultimate WHY. 


What you've learned is that you want to lose weight so ultimately your confidence will allow you to have a career that gives your life a sense of fulfillment and purpose.


Most of the time you will discover your original goal wasn't really your main goal after all, rather an action in the steps you will take to gain what you most desire.  Keep this desire at the forefront when you are considering having that extra large piece of cheesecake for dessert and you'll find it's easier to say no.
