Be looking now (don’t wait until January) for that new job
|
Think of all the people you’re going to be in touch with over the next 5 weeks.

It’s Thanksgiving/early December so it’s time to suspend that job search or put the whole thing off until January, right?
Wrong!
Here are 4 big reasons to keep your search going OR even to start one right now:
- Hiring DOES take place this time of year. I can tell you of several clients over the years who were interviewed in late November-early December, landed their new job, and were asked to start December 10th or even December 29th. There are many reasons for this -- using a budget slot before it goes away, starting the employee so s/he can qualify for the stock options program a year earlier, getting the new person in so they can be added to trainings scheduled for early in the new year, are just a few.
- Recruiters are usually between projects and have more time now, if they’re in the office, to take your call or even see you. While external recruiters will tell you they "place" only about 10 out of every 100 professional and management candidates, they are still a rich resource for info about companies you might want to target. Not to mention openings they may have at their clients.
- As a job search coach, I see an influx of inquiries and new clients at two key times of year: right after Labor Day (a "new year", based on the US school year), and the first week of January. My clients right now not only get more of my attention at this time of year, despite the holidays, but they will be READY for their search -- with sharpened goals, a new resume and upgraded LinkedIn profile -- just when others are getting started on these things. In other words, you’ll be ahead of your competition on January 1st.
- Think of all the people you’ll be seeing between now and the end of the year, 5 weeks from now! Thanksgiving reunions, holiday parties, office gatherings. All those chances to say "Can we talk in January? I’m making some decisions about my future and would love your opinion on _____." Then reconnect the last week of December to set up meetings in January.
In the end, you’ll thank yourself for doing this now, for being ahead of all those "start in January" candidates. You're worth it!

It fits with the season, this time of year when we stand back a bit and appreciate what we have.
And that doesn’t mean creature comforts so much as it means
gratitude
for how some have helped you this year. And for those who’ve supported your dreams
and
challenges. It means so much to these folks when you do one of the following:
- Thank them publicly on LinkedIn or social media, with their name linked back to their page, so others can find out about them
- Write a short thank-you note and send it via US mail, pointing out how they helped you, and offering to help them, perhaps by contributing to their favorite charity
- Send a small, meaningful gift to those who really went out of their way to help you.
Showing your appreciation like this will show how classy you are. And you’ll feel great doing it!
