The Wild Robot

This is a really unique story. A ship carrying hundreds of robots sinks in a hurricane and all the robots are destroyed except one, who washed onto the shore of an uninhabited island. Not knowing that she's not supposed to be there, Roz learns to adapt to her environment. The book is full of curriculum nuggets about animal adaptation, and at times it feels slightly expository. The writing occasionally feels a bit dry, but then again, it is about a robot so that kind of fits. Roz eventually befriends the animals on the island and even rears a young goose whom she saved from certain death. The end is unexpectedly harrowing, heartwarming, and leaves you wanting a sequel. Eleanor and Park

This is a heartbreakingly honest book about teens, high school, relationships, bullying, and terribly dysfunctional families. It is set in the 1980’s (when I was in high school) so I found it even more poignant and relevant. I loved this book and read it compulsively. I wept over this book, did not want it to end, and I hope somewhere Eleanor and Park are living happily ever after. Though it is a book meant for teens, adults will appreciate the fine writing. I can’t wait to explore more from this author – Fangirl is next on my list. (Young Adult Fiction)

The pictures are gorgeous, the flavor combinations are delicious and easy to prepare.
