| | Jesus, left, and his son, Mark Anthony |
| Some teenagers mow the lawn. Others, like Mark Anthony, 13, water flowers, for about 30 minutes each day since, well, there's a lot of flowers to water in the Delvarre family's Wicker Park yard.
The Delvarres moved to the neighborhood 11 years ago and started a garden soon thereafter. "The house looked too dull when we first got it," Mark Anthony explained while translating for his dad.
| |
"In two weeks," per Jesus, these flowers will be in full bloom. The Pipeline looks forward to a return pop-by!
| Roses, peonies, apples, pears, lettuce, and a soon-to-bloom "colored pink flower," per this video clip with Jesus, are just a few of the plants that we noticed in the amazing and fragrant yard, which has made a positive impact on neighbors, too. Anthony and his wife (whose name we thought we'd easily remember but should have jotted down!) have even created a space in front of their home for their neighbors to garden too.

Kirk and his daughter were both practicing on wheels this past Sunday in the parking lot of Burr School
| With Father's Day Weekend approaching, we figured it would be a good time to highlight other local dads, spotted out and about with their young ones, like Kirk, who was practicing longboard skateboarding in the parking lot of Burr Elementary school this past Sunday as his daughter rode her bicycle nearby.
"Normally I bike to work. This [board] is for shorter commutes to the corner store and back," Kirk said, showing us a board he picked up recently in Wyoming. The 52-year-old skater added, with a twinkle in his eye. "I'm not trying to do any tricks with it."
If any readers are looking for a good place to take their dads for the holiday, consider brunch or dinner at Club Lucky, a Pipeline Printer's Angel Sponsor. Club Lucky is rolling out the stops with two special fixed-price menus this Sunday, valet parking, AND and a discount for future visits.
Inside Delish Diner/Photo by Alisa Hauser
|
Got a history buff dad? Consider Division Street's Delish Diner, which opened yesterday (Monday) at 2018 W. Division, in a former funeral parlor, and features unique menu items like "Eggs Benowitz", which pay homage to owner Phillipe Caro's in-laws, as well as his Mexican roots (Caro is also the owner of longtime Division Street standby, Picante.) Read more about Delish in today's (WED) Thrillist update.
Emily of Roots Handmade Pizza points to the roof, where there will soon be a garden
|
If you are hankering to leave the neighborhood, like The Pipeline sometimes does (and did this past Monday night on the occasion of a friend's birthday), check out West Town's Roots Handmade Pizza, which is owned by the same team behind The Fifty/50. Roots features fresh, tasty pizza (which we did not document; yay for breaks!) that we imagine most any dad would dig, along with a wide selection of craft brews. If food is not the only thing you sponsor for your dad on his day, consider a gift, or treating him to a massage package at Reina Spa. There's also a few great office/desk ideas in Virtu's latest missive, like a baseball mitt business card holder.
A Father's Day card from Division Street's Paper Doll
|
Looking to spend no more than $15 on dad? We hear you and feel the cash crunch too! Consider this one-of-a-kind World's Best Dad tin, which promises a trophy and a gift on its cover, but is empty inside. Why not fill it with homemade cookies, and a classy greeting card from Paper Doll's Division street shop? The tin is available for $15 (or any offer, really). Let us know if you want it, or another "auction item" from the Shopper's Warehouse closing sale. Proceeds benefit the printing of our printed booklet! | | Thank you to Danny and Danny, of D+D Liquors (named for its location at Damen and Division) for being a Printer's Angel and contributing valuable support to help make the printed booklet possible. You'll find an exclusive interview with 'the elder D' highlighting D+D's 29-year history in the neighborhood inside the booklet's centerfold! |
We will be putting together a short pipeline next week so that we can devote more time to the booklet! All booklet content is being copy edited by Pat as I type this, and we are awaiting late-coming ads (you know who you are- there's about 10 of you!) as well as wrapping up a few custom ads we agreed to design. Whether you are an area business who began relying on the pipeline to provide local news in April of 2009 (when we were a very small freelance project sponsored by the chamber), or a resident we met at an event or a festival, or a 'hood-rat who likes to check out the places we highlight, we appreciate your interest and your support. This past weekend we attended an event organized by Daris Jaspar, whom we met at Dunkin Donuts over a year ago after overhearing him speak with a designer at a nearby table.
Daris, at far left, snaps a photo of the Clandestino Idol Worship dinner this past Saturday evening
|
It turned out that the project was confidential (so we didn't report on it!), but we added Daris to our list. This past Saturday night we attended a Clandestino Supper Club dinner which Daris had emailed us a press release about. The gathering took pace in the studio of idol portrait painter Jeffrey Reid. It wasn't until the end of the evening when Daris blurted out, "Dunkin Donuts!" and recalled how he'd gotten on our list (since neither of us could remember). Check out a few photos/words from the Idol Worship gathering here. Speaking of "here," it's a word we use a lot, both 'here' in the Pipeline when we insert links to local businesses and on the streets where we dock a lot of time. This past Monday we noticed that Delish was open for business, but we didn't have time to pop in and get 'the scoop.' Two friendly women, above, were standing outside the diner. We asked if they'd mind writing a review, though the 'opening day groupies' turned out to be Delish owner Philippe Caro's mother-and-law, and his sister. While they promised to email me a story by today's deadline, it's possible they decided they'd be too biased! (If they send it in; we'll share it next week). Thanks for contributing to this pipeline, for reading it, and for making the time we elect to invest into it feel like time well spent. There's no better return. Your Pipeline TeamAlisa, Nandika, Phlash, Pat, Joe
Phlash's son, Marty, catches a fish at a Chicago Park District Lagoon, with the help of "Fisherman Bob," who heads up the Park District's fishing dept. Marty learned to fish during a free park event this past weekend, as his dad, Philin Phlash, stood proudly behind his camera's lense!

A man driving U-Haul robbed a woman of her purse near the corner of Division and Honore at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, according to this post on Chicago News Report.
Redeye finds out once and for all that there will indeed be a Walgreens in the old Midwest Bank building at Damen and Milwaukee. After getting varying answers from people involved in the project, Ruthie Kott got word from Walgreens spokesman Robert Elfinger that Walgreens has signed a lease and plans to open around the winter of 2012.

This New York Times article goes under the dome of St. Mary of the Angels church, left, which has been under renovation for years.
Who do you think has the most delicious VEGGIE burger in Chicago? Redeye writer Emily Morse is looking for your suggestions, and Wicker Park should be full of them.
Redeye's Ruthie Kott takes a look at Wicker Park clothing staple Akira's presence elsewhere in the city, like the Akira fashion show at the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's and the company's involvement in the Generation Y program at Northside College Prep.

BEAT 1424 CAPS Dispatch
|
| | This photo does not have anything to do with the CAPS meeting, but Phlash popped by with a bunch of out-of-the-neighborhood images from the DIFFA 2011 Gala downtown and we didn't know where to weave them into today's issue. |
At last Wednesday's beat 1424 CAPS meeting, which covers the Wicker Park area, beat facilitator Mark Amundson was happy to report that crime was on the decline. "From doing this as many years as I have, the statistics are significantly down and our net totals are a third or a quarter of what they were 7 to 10 years ago," said Amundson, who went on to say that the area was the best improved district in the city. "You live in one of the safest beats that we have."
Amundson went on to discuss how the police are tackling the homeless problem in and around the park, including the "rail rider" kids who have been squatting nearby with some reportedly vicious dogs. Read More.

There's no need to trek to your nearest grocery store for produce in the summertime when you can trek to two great local markets just a mile or so away from each other...

Up Close with Chef Kenny Robinson of Heat, which is 'Heating' Up Six Corners
|
| | Meet Kenny Robinson, the brains and chef behind Heat, located at 1570 1/2 N. Damen (in the basement of Flash Taco) |
First things first, if you're looking to find your French fries squished inside of your Vienna Beef hot dog, we suggest that you go to any one of Chicago's old school hotdog stands, like Sam's on Armitage or Western's Redhot Ranch, which we featured in a past Pipeline.
"You want a hot dog to be a hot dog and to stand on its own, and the fries to do the same," asserted hot dog revolutionary Kenny of Heat, located at 1570 N. Damen (in the basement of Flash Taco). Kenny was sitting next to us as we devoured a classic Chicago style dog this past Thursday night, just a few days after Heat's opening day. We got a bit of a grilling from the executive chef himself for not having purchased any of Heat's wild game meat dogs (we just weren't in the mood to be adventurous), but thoroughly enjoyed what we did consume, namely a classic dog, made with delicious and perfectly charred black Angus Eisenberg meat and embellished with locally sourced ingredients like Co-Op Hot Sauce. The pleated hot-dog wrapper was a quaint touch over industry standard grease soaked butcher paper, though mum's the word on the supplier, per Kenny, who must understandably keep some competitive secrets.
The fries, made with truffle oil, were, as stated, wrapped independently of the dog, and tasted so rich we felt compelled to save them for breakfast the following morning.
Heat, 1570 1/2 Damen, at Six Corners, is open Everyday of the Week, from 11AM-4AM Sun-Thurs. and until 5AM on Fri & Sat. (in case you want to eat fries for breakfast too)

Division Cleaners, 2108 W. Division, closed for business and abruptly relocated this past week, leaving a note on the door indicating a new location. Sue of Division Cleaners was a very familiar and friendly face working in the window over the past many years and she will be missed.
"After years of confusing our customers, NICHE IS GONE." begins an e-newsletter from City Soles (no longer City Soles/Niche) about its new old name. In other name change news, a delicious Mexican joint that we profiled here in 'Spaces' last year and cannot think of the name, now most definitely has a new name, Quesadilla La Reyna del Sur, and is advertising Mexican Vegetarian Cuisine in its window sign.
Mr. Amazing Loans, a 'leading alternative financial services company,' per its website, is moving into the storefront beneath the Bucktown Station condos, 1845 N. Western.
A sale is pending at a building at the corner of Schiller and Leavitt, which will become a new pre-school soon. Per this sign in the window, infant and toddlers (and presumably their parents) are welcome at an upcoming Open House for Green Pre-school this Sunday, June 19 from Noon to 4 PM.
Got news to share regarding an up-and-coming space? You will receive a byline, credit, and oodles of thanks, not to mention it's likely your news will get picked up by other media outlets. The pipeline's off-the-beaten-path "tidbits" featured here often end up in the headlines of larger media outlets, indicating that in addition to providing a pipeline of information to our neighbor-readers, this weekly community-driven newsletter serves as a 'tip sheet' for larger outlets. Currently we're wondering about lots of new spaces, and simply don't have the hours in the day to get all the scoops, so reach out, or call 773-960-3997 and help to feed the inquiring minds of your neighbors! "BOOKLET UPDATE"
|
| | Ted, left, and Mike of Rite Liquors-- they're on Facebook! |
OK, we're sticking this update at the end of today's issue because we understand there is more brewing in the 'hood than the booklet, but we wanted to say THANKS to ALL participants! Many thanks to Mike and his son, Ted, of Rite Liquors, which has been at 1648 W. Division since, as Teddy says it, "1920-something." This just might the oldest bar in the 'hood. Plus, it's also a liquor store. We first met the father-and-son duo while working as an advertising sales rep at the Chicago Reader. Unsure of a campaign, we thought of the question, "Is it [Rite] a bar? Is it a liquor store?" and then concluded that Rite Liquors is both of those things.
Many thanks also to new Printer's Angels, Danny and Danny, the father-and-son duo behind D+D Food & Liquor, which has been in the neighborhood 29 years, at Damen and Division. The upcoming booklet will include an interview with Danny, along with a fun centerfold spread featuring photos snapped inside the community-minded neighborhood store. Thanks also to De Louice Custom Tailor & Design!
| |
Booklet cover art by Rick Liebenow
| 100% of Printer's Angel Advertising is applied directly to the costs associated with printing the booklet, so we can make the good news highlighting so many available to all! Printer's Angels receive TOP BILLING, as well as premier placement within a unique documentation of our eclectic and awesome neighborhood! Email or call 773-960-3997 if you would like to be a Printer's Angel. The content is now in copy editing and we are finalizing ads, though we can and will accept ads from Angel Level sponsors. We've closed out both custom editorial and custom ad design at this late point.
A note on deadlines: Last week we went a bit overboard on freaking out about the deadline (we're cool like that). As long as we have all of your ads SOON, we should be on track. The booklet will hit the counters of participants shortly after the July 4th holiday, or more likely mid-July since we are waiting on some ads and such. Many of you have reached out about the deadline, and have made arrangements for the ads that we are still expecting. If we do not know the status of your ad (or your payment) get in touch ASAP. Thanks.
