When James Buffington, above, was eight years old, his parents took him to see the Smothers Brothers, where one of the comedians on the bill used a yo-yo in his act. Enthralled, James purchased a yo-yo during intermission, and, fast forward 25 or so years, and he's the founder of the Chicago Yo-Yo Club, which, if you haven't heard, meets monthly at Pipeline sponsor Cat & Mouse Game Store, though this had no bearing on our decision to report on the following adventure in a Bucktown alley.
| | This young yo-yo club member houses his collection in a briefcase that once belonged to his grandfather! |
This past Saturday a swarm of onlookers, Jason's parents, Sherry and Joel, Yo-Yo Club members like Cally and Jack (who chatted briefly on video), and expert witnesses like Mary and Anita, founders of a Chicago-based toy industry convention, waited in anticipation alongside Bucktown's Cat & Mouse Game Store as James and his trusty Aquarius (beefed up with durable polyester sewing thread because, as he explained, "cotton [thread] would snap") prepared to make history. And by history, we're referring to attempting to get himself inside the pages of the venerable Guinness Book of World Records.
Would James have the dexterity and strength to smash a 2010 (documented) world record of 39 ft 2 inches, for the longest usable yo-yo thread? We were curious. Come along!

RESIDENTIAL SPACES is Made Possible by Eva Bergant, @properties Realtor
| There are questions some buyers ask, like, How safe is this neighborhood?
Or, Who else lives in this building?
These questions are never answered by a Realtor, because to do so would be in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
All Realtors must provide equal professional service without regard to the race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, or sexual orientation of any prospective client, customer, or of the residents of any community. A Realtor may not encourage any group into or away from any property.
In Chicago, there is public information available through the CPD Web site. Here is the link to the ClearMap for Bucktown. It's easy to look up to any area of the city and find information.
As the line goes in Hill Street Blues: "Let's Be Careful Out There." Regardless of where you live, crime happens in every neighborhood, so please be safe.
| | A deadline-night stroll led to this Bucktown property, in the 1800 block of North Wood, which sold for over $900,000 this past week/ photo by Alisa Hauser | Over the past two weeks in WPB there were 12 closings, ranging from a one-bedroom condo on the low end to a near $1 million 4-bedroom, 3 bath home on the high end. Four of the closings were detached single family homes, and eight were attached. Read all about them HERE.
Got a property topic you'd like to see explored, or a real estate question? Send it in. If you'd like more information on properties currently on the market, or are thinking of selling your home, drop me a note. Eva Bergant is a Bucktown resident and local Realtor with a community driven style. READER RAVE: The ReBuilding Exchange
Words and images by Scott Schneider |

ReBuilding Exchange
|
If you drive past the old abandoned Hayes Boiler location, directly south of Green Dolphin on Ashland, you might think it's still an empty building, but if you head around back you'll find the new home of the ReBuilding Exchange. They recently relocated from the southwest side and sell a wide variety of salvaged building materials, including doors, windows, lumber, plumbing and lighting fixtures, cabinets, wood flooring, and even appliances. If they don't have it, you might not really need it.
As a non-profit organization, their goals are to divert usable building materials from landfills, provide employment and training to disadvantaged workers, and to resell the salvaged goods at a low cost. The amount of materials from demolished buildings makes up a huge portion our nation's waste stream, so recycling any part of it is perhaps the easiest way to be green. All of their stock comes from donations, so if you have something that could be put to reuse check out their website. Also, they were featured in a recent Redeye article. -- Scott Schneider

The Tribune published more details about the bank robbery at the FirstMerit Bank at 2130 W. North last week. Two men were apprehended shortly after they ran from the bank carrying $15,506.Demetrius Patterson, 42, and Quinton Vaughn, 20, were also carrying a .380-caliber pistol containing seven rounds, latex gloves, a BB gun, and several clothing items matching clothing that the robbers wore. Check out this contest that is being hosted by Evan Kane of Weichert Realtors. If you can guess the future selling price of this Wicker Park 3-bedroom home, you might win $200! According to Curbed Chicago, the house was once owned by the lead singer of Disturbed, David Draiman, who bought it for $849,000 in 2005 and took a huge loss when he sold it for $695,000 in 2009. The Redeye's Ruthie Kott recently wrote this piece on Lillie's Q head chef and owner, Charlie McKenna, who's team took home 12th place in this year's Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Coming in 12th isn't so bad when there are 62 other groups, but according to McKenna, they've never not been in the top 10. Photographer Will Rice snapped this beautiful (and copyrighted, hence just a link) image of a fox sleeping under some foliage in Bucktown. | | Photo by Philin Phlash |
Youtube user J1970jam recently uploaded this video of last April's Critical Mass rolling through Wicker Park, set to some pretty entertaining old-timey music. This Market Watch story mentions Bucktown-based online food delivery firm GrubHub, which "drew $20 million in venture funding last quarter," according to the article. Grubhub now employs 140 people but spokeswoman Amy Le says that the company plans to grow to 200 by the end of the year. On-street bike parking will be coming to Wicker Park, in front of the Flatiron Building, according to this Curbed Chicago article. The story also states that Alderman Joe Moreno has his mind set on removing one lane of parking on Milwaukee, from Division to California, to make room for a protected bike lane. Drummond Montessori is holding their 2nd Annual Pink Tower Party on June 2 at Uncle Fatty's Rum Resort, 2833 N. Sheffield, to raise money for the school, which is the only Montessori in the Chicago public school system. According to the event flyer, the evening will include dinner, drinks, entertainment, and a silent auction and raffle. Tickets are $50adv./$75door. For more details, check out their website. Some activists are protesting Ald. Joe Moreno's plan to raise the cost of city stickers for some, and lower it for others. Read more in this Yahoo.com story.

In the Tribune's Sunday Weekend insert, there was a story on a Bucktown woman who raises butterflies. The Chicago Reader staff featured 25 Notable Spots for alfresco dining in this detailed account. Of the diverse mix, six spaces are located right here. Dean Fisher featured a Wicker Park couple in the Reader's new Space column. Kevin Warwick declared his portobello po'boy from Avocado Cafe & Eatery to be "giant and reasonably priced at seven bucks" in this Reader review. This morning's (Tuesday) Thrillist email featured The Bedford in the former MB Bank building, across from The Polish Triangle. Via the Evil Kitty blog, these pretty in pink summer fashions were looking fresh and daring. Got the local news bug too? Following are just a few hyper-local media sites that are on the Pipeline's radar. If we're missing yours, let us know.

BuckWick Organix Convenience is slated to open soon at 1563 N. Milw., next to Myopic Books. The grocery is owned by the same folks who own two smoke shops, one across from the grocery, next to American Apparel, and another on Division, a few blocks east of Damen. BuckWick will offer organic food and lots of interesting items like Himalayan Pink Salt, gummy bears, and curry-flavored pretzel twists, among other munchies. Go inside BuckWick with us, for a speed-tour with Syed.
Sacco Bruno
|
Sacco Bruno ('brown bag" in the Sicilian mother tongue) opened this past Saturday. We popped in in owner Joe at the tail end of the day. Joe has worked in the restaurant industry for over 20 years, most recently as the GM at a Lincoln Park bar and grill. A longtime local, Joe reported that he'd been eying the space at Armitage and Leavitt (where Doc Smoothies used to be) and chose to open an Italian deli in the space because he felt like there wasn't a place in the neighborhood similar to Bari Foods (on west Grand). We then glanced at this menu board and did not see 'Bari pricing', like this, though there is still plenty to get pumped about at Sacco Bruno, like lots of open space, a possible adjoining bar awaiting licensing, and a photo collage of Joe's ancestors along the wall by the soda machine. We didn't get a chance to try the food, since the joint had just closed, and we do not eat meat often, though a few days earlier we'd enjoyed a Reuben sandwich on marble rye up the street at Sterling Goss which was one of the very first members of The Pipeline's defunct 'Angel Club.' SG opened back in October of 2008, just a few months before we launched the Pipeline! Has it really been over two years?! In any case, we hear there might be some exciting picnic-inspired developments in Sterling Goss's 'pipeline,' perhaps in time for Fathers Day catering. Stay tuned! |

Baked Banana, #39 on MC's menu
|
The newish M&C Vietnamese French Restaurant and Lounge, at 1401 N. Ashland, opened this past January, at Blackhawk and Ashland. By newish, we mean it was new to us, since we last recall a Moroccan restaurant in the space. On a recent 'pop in,' we enjoyed a grilled sub and domestic beer daily special for an impressive $6.95. Read/see more inside M&C here. In fast turnover news, the former Crosell & Co. space on north Damen appears to be an eyelash boutique, per this sign, and Tipsy Cake, a bakery, will be moving into the former Grasshopper space at 1944 N. Damen. In other news, Cleo's, both its Armitage and Chicago Ave. locations, are under new ownership. Thus far, only the Armitage bar is called Jack & Ginger, inspired by Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale, per friendly bartender Steph. Looking for a job? J&G is hiring too, per a sign on its door.
Future home of The Beer Temple
|
Brainstorm Comics, at 1644 W. North, is fixing to greet a new neighbor. The Beer Temple is slated to open by late fall, or just before the new year, according to the building's owner, Lillian, who reported that her new tenants will feature beers from around the world at their bar/sanctuary.
Are you a Talking Heads fan too? We think we read that there will be a Talking Heads cover band at Do Division Fest, June 4-5
| As reported last week, the David Leonardis Gallery is closing May 31 and is now offering massive deals on hundreds of pieces. The centerpiece artist of the gallery, the late Howard Finster, is considered to be the grandfather of modern folk art. Finster, at least in many people's world who came of age in the 80s, is best known as the cover artist for this and other Talking Heads albums, right. But don't just trust our take on Finster; check out a small fraction of the art at DLG here. Got news to share regarding an up-and-coming space? You will receive a byline, photo credit, and oodles of thanks! Currently we're wondering about lots of spaces, so reach out, or call 773-960-3997 and help to feed the inquiring minds of your neighbors! - ah |

Community News...
Maybe Bucktowner, Alex, age 1, wants to keep the Pipeline Community News section going strong, just like his first strides, aided by his sweet set of blue wheels?
Alex was hanging out in Walsh Park, at our coverage area's easternmost border this past Sunday, when we couldn't resist asking his mother, Lisa, if we could lay on the pavement and say to Alex, "It's OK, you can run me over!" while snapping a few pictures. Then he took our word as truth and got really close, fast. Yikes!

Polish Triangle, Ashland/Division/Milw., Winter 2010
|
A good place to begin today's Community News journey is perhaps with the latest WPB Chamber e-newsletter (5/24), which includes information on how to apply to be a vendor in the upcoming Polish Triangle Farmers' Market, slated to run from June 30 through the end of Sept. Then, we'll move on to Wicker Park's park, at 1425 N. Damen, which will soon to be home to the Sunday Farmers' Market, beginning Sunday June 5, from 8AM-2PM. Per the market's website, we learned that 1) The market accepts the Illinois LINK card, and 2) 17 vendors will be participating in the Sunday market, including Jake's Country Meats, of Cassopolis, MI. The official home of 'pork you can trust,' Jake's Country Meats is coincidentally a Pipeline booklet sponsor too! (we initially met the JCM team at the Logan Square Indoor Winter Farmers' Market). Oh yeah, before we forget, there's many other reason besides the market to hit up our awesome park: Doug Wood of the Wicker Park Garden Club sent in a colorful flyer, above. If you've walked down Division Street lately, perhaps you've noticed a Mural-in-the-Making, below, at LaSalle II Magnet School?
Philin Phlash captures a fast young artist on the move at LaSalle II Magnet School
|
The mural, commissioned to the Green Star Movement with support from the Chamber/SSA #33, will be complete any day now, with a ribbon cutting ceremony slated for June 3 at 1:30PM. Learn more about the project in this press release (we did not get a chance to update the release with the new date of June 3). The BCO Tree and GardenWalk will be held on July 9-10. Via the BCO's latest e-newsletter, we learned that the organizers are looking for gardens! Complete the form HERE, or print and mail it. Deadline: June 8. Send an email for details.
| | Chef Dudley makes Tilapia Tacos at La Fonda Del Gusto, during Learnapalooza 2010 |
Are you a teacher, or would you like to be one for just a day? Learnapalooza, a community-wide festival of communal teaching, is slated to take place Sat., June 25. The Pipeline had a blast at last year's event, attending sessions on hypnosis and cooking (photos here!). If you have a skill and are interested in teaching a 45-minute class, visit Learnapalooza's blog to sign up. On the note of Sat. June 25, as well as Sunday, we'd be remiss not to mention another event happening in the 'hood... Green Music Fest features Yo La Tengo, Trampled by Turtles, and lots of other bands. Check out the full fest lineup on Chicagoist. In visiting First Ward Alderman 'Proco' Joe Moreno at his satellite office in Wicker Park this past Sunday, we learned of a special T-shirt pairing betwixt Moreno and Yo La Tengo, reportedly the music loving alderman's "favorite band of all time." Sales from the Joe vs. Yo La Tengo shirts will benefit neighborhood schools. Green Music Fest is sponsored by the Wicker Park Bucktown and West Town chambers. It takes place on Damen, from North to Schiller. Learn more at the fest's site. |

| Eric's rise from late 1980's Six Corner street wear hustler to founder and owner of one of the most innovative and evolving retail spaces in the neighborhood did not happen by accident.
Stay tuned for Eric's story, along with tales from 14 other indie entrepreneurs, in We're in the Neighborhood! |
Are you an artist? The deadline for submitting art for inclusion in the Silver Room's 9th Annual Sound System Block Party is this Fri., May 27. Details here. On Wed, June 1st, the Wicker Park Committee's monthly meeting will include a presentation about the Bloomingdale Trail, as well as Barcade, a proposed business on Milw. Ave, next to Barry's Drugs, which requires a zoning change. (Per a bit of Googling, Barcade appears to be a craft bar and arcade space, headquartered in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY) Other Community News Sources: Friends of Holstein Park Wicker Park Committee WP Garden Club Are we missing your community link? We're guessing "yes!" Thanks for your patience in pardoning our dust as we revamp this section. |

"Liberation Summer" Kicks Off the Summer at Monique Meloche Gallery
|
How can you create a painting without using paint? For artist Kendell Carter, the answer was shoelaces, which, when layered together, look like three dimensional paint strokes. How can you create a painting without painting on a canvas? Could you paint heavy layers onto a canvas, and then carefully peel the paint off from it, and cut the paint into strips before weaving them together, so that the paint itself serves as canvas, case in point being this extremely intriguing piece, below, which hangs on the gallery's front-door-facing wall, greeting you as you walk inside and into Liberation Summer?
A woven canvas made of paint, by Kendell Carter
|
Liberation Summer, hanging through July 30 at Division Street's Monique Meloche Gallery, is full of color, and labels, and gold hip hop chains splayed out among silhouettes, pulling together a myriad of reference points that have "marked" elements of what artist Kendell Carter refers to as "Subjective Blackness." When juxtaposed against casual cultural markings and literal interpretations of 'mark,' as in perhaps a tongue-and-cheek shout-out to the hip-hopper, Mark Wahlberg, the result is an exhibit that feels as fresh and striking to the viewer as it likely did to its creator, whom, per gallery curator Monique, reported that he was most inspired by challenging traditional art making during the making of Liberation Summer.
Copper work boots, by Kendell Carter
|
The work of Kendell Carter (American, born New Orleans 1970) has been reviewed in Art in America, ArtFoum.com, and the Los Angeles Times, thus, we will not pretend to know anything about writing about serious art like Carter's, though we suggest anyone reading this to seriously check out the show soon! You might never see gleaming cooper work boots shining in the summer sun anywhere else again. Regardless of whether or not you've got the dough or desire to purchase art, it's not about the money when you are standing in front of something that someone else has gone to great lengths to create and you're just fortunate enough to be able to marvel at it, before moving along on your way, a bit calmer than you were when you walked inside. Great art, like Carter's, soothes the nerves of a driftless griot. -ah |

"PARTICIPATION IS THE NEW ADVERTISING"
|
| |
Precious needs to see your ads soon! Don't upset her!
|
OK, we're sticking this lil' update at the end of today's issue because we understand there is much more stuff brewing in the 'hood than the We're in the Neighborhood booklet, but we wanted to say THANKS to all 120+plus participants, including booklet newcomers like First Ward Ald. 'Proco' Joe Moreno.
This Friday is the preferred deadline for all ads! However, we will accept ads through June 13, as long as they are camera ready, jpeg files, 120dpi. Our designer (the talented Joe Rubin of Odd Obsession) must have all booklet content by June 15, so we can meet a June 30th publishing deadline.
We say participation vs. advertising, because by being part of this booklet you are getting something in return: the continued existence of this e-pipeline, which, if you are still reading this, means you're participating on some level, by reading, sending us your news, visiting some of the places and events we feature here, or just skimming pictures.
|

| | Thanks to Caroline, District Manager of Chicago American Apparel
stores, and Dov Charney, founder of American Apparel, above, for participating in the booklet (as well as standing patiently by the fountain in the park for this portrait, despite the evening chill)
|
The length constraints of this weekly e-newsletter means that we cannot work with more than a few advertisers at a time. The printed booklet presents a rare opportunity for everyone to be part of a unique and innovative printed documentation of Wicker Park Bucktown.
All booklet participants will receive a listing, in addition to their ad space, as well as a complimentary link in our new 'appreciation roll,' on the left-hand side of EVERY pipeline, through the end of 2011. Email or call 773-960-3997 to get started. We hope you can join We're in the Neighborhood, too, since you're in it too. Thanks! |
