Feeding birds is relaxing, enjoyable, entertaining, and it benefits the birds. But all wild bird feed isn't the same. When you buy food for you or your pets you read the ingredients. Should you do the same when purchasing that bag of wild bird feed?

All wild bird feed must be labeled by law and in the order of the products it contains from highest to lowest. Learn how and why you should read the label of ingredients and what it is that birds want. A quality wild bird feed may cost a little more, but with more seed eaten and less wasted seed scattered to the ground it will save you money in the long run.

August Bird Notes:
  • Most birds have completed nesting except for goldfinch, cedar waxwings, and doves.
  • Hummingbirds will start their southern migration and its time to get the feeders out.
  • Bird migration begins in August with songbirds leading the way followed by shorebirds.
  • By months end the mud flats and shallows will teem with shorebirds.
  • We will be saying goodbye to many tropical visitors by months end.
  • The autumn molt will begin for birds and a period of “quiet time” will set-in.
  • This years hatchlings will be on their own and looking more and more like adult birds.
  • First year black birds will begin flocking up by months end preparing to leave.
  • Nutra Saff and safflower seed remains popular for deterring squirrels and blackbirds.
